John King was born in 1932 in Shranaploya, Co. Mayo, Ireland to Patrick and Margaret Healey King. He was one of nine children. As a young child, his family relocated to Ratoath in Co. Meath, Ireland, where he was trained in carpentry. He came to America in 1955. He married Mary Frances Moran in 1956 at St. Peter’s Church, Staten Island. He resided in New Brighton and attended St. Peter’s Church until relocating to New Springville in 1981, where he was a member of St. Patrick’s Parish. He worked as a skilled carpenter all his life. He was a member of the NYC District Council of Carpenters until retirement and continued working on, building, and designing projects of all kinds for his own home and the homes of his ever-grateful family members. He was a very generous, talented, and hardworking man and provided well for his wife and seven children. He was active in Irish Northern Aid Committee (NORAID) for many years. He was a faithful participant in the NYC and Staten Island St. Patrick’s Day parades until his failing health prevented him.
As aging advanced, he relocated to Dutchess County in June 2022 to reside at the Meadows at Brookmeade where he quickly made many friends of the staff, residents and their families.
Having been predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Mary Frances, in 2015 and his eldest child, Sean, in 2008, He is survived by his sister, Philomena King Dwyer of Ireland and his remaining 6 children, Kathleen Hayes (John), Brian King (Anthony Russell [Russ] Johnson), Joan Jones, Peter King (Carolyn), Eileen King, Noreen Vozzo (Edward) as well as 12 grandchildren. He was the beloved uncle of dozens and dozens of devoted nieces and nephews in the USA, as well as in Ireland.
His family would like to express gratitude to the residents, their families and staff of the Meadows at Brookmeade for their friendship, kindness and skill in making John’s ‘golden years’ truly golden.
A visitation for John will be held Friday, October 18, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Casey Funeral Home, 350 Slosson Ave, Staten Island, NY 10314. A funeral service will occur Saturday, October 19, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Patrick's Church, 53 St Patricks Pl, New York, NY 10306.
