John Arthur Higgins was born in Staten Island, New York, on August 3, 1945, to the late John and Florence (Williams) Higgins. He passed away at his home in Staten Island, New York, on December 24, 2023, surrounded by his family.
A graduate of Port Richmond High School in 1963, John attended Wagner College for one year before attending Missouri Valley College on a baseball scholarship. He was named “Little All American” in his college years and had the potential to join a minor league baseball team. He graduated in 1969 with a dual degree in Biology and Psychology. He was interested in the biological and psychological causes of neurological disorders and disabilities. He worked for Chicago Title and Custom Title Services as a real estate title specialist.
On June 3, 1972, John married the love of his life, Joan (Garrity). They recently celebrated their 51stwedding anniversary. They raised three children in John’s childhood home with his aunts, Barbara and Rita, living in the apartment upstairs. John enjoyed watching sports, especially the New York Yankees, the New York Giants, and Notre Dame football and basketball teams. He loved to read the newspaper every day and enjoyed arguing politics with anyone who opposed his views. More than anything else, he loved his family and spending time with them. He often watched sporting events on television with his sons and movies with his wife. His daughter was Daddy’s little girl, and his grandchildren meant the world to him.
John is survived by his loving wife Joan, sons Jeffrey (Barbara) and John, daughter Jeanne (Jose) Ramos, and grandchildren Devin, Alyssa, Jared, Erin, Ava, and Rihanna.
