STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Native Staten Islander Grace Ferranti, 73, a retired director for the city Housing Authority and longtime community activist, died Tuesday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze.
Born Grace Vicari in Meiers Corners, she also lived on Todt Hill before settling in Graniteville 10 years ago.
She graduated from William H. Maxwell High School in Brooklyn and she earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the College of Staten Island.
Mrs. Ferranti worked as a director for the city Housing Authority for 24 years on Staten Island, retiring in 2002.
She set up outreach programs and youth programs throughout the five boroughs. She was one of the coordinators of a Rent Cap bill in Washington with former Congressman Guy Molinari.
In 1992, Mrs. Ferranti founded a non-for-profit organization called Caring About People Visual Productions that focused on informational shows on public service and government information.
She and her son, Henry, produced over 17 years of television shows, all with volunteers. In 1997, she received a commendation from former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani for her show “Blueprint for Tomorrow,” which featured needs and concerns of the elderly, handicapped, retirees, veterans, and teens.
Mrs. Ferranti was a recipient of many awards, including the Rudolph Giuliani Women of Achievement of the Year Award; Catholic War Veterans USA Award; America News Media Award, and she also received commendation from former City Councilman Michael McMahon for her outstanding work in the city and community.
“She was my rock, my confidante, I am so proud of her work she has done in her community for most of her life,” said her son, Henry. “I have lost someone special.”
“My grandma was a strong, lovable woman,” added her granddaughter, Casandra.
“My grandma was perfect,” said her grandson, Jack.
Her daughter, Marie Ferranti Ostaski, died in 2002.
In addition to her son, Henry, and two grandchildren, surviving is her brother, Anthony Vicari.
A graveside service will take place tomorrow at 10 a.m. in St. Peter’s Cemetery, West Brighton. Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners
