George served honorably in the Coast Guard during the Korean War. After his time in the Coast Guard, he worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad. George saw the error of his ways and joined the FDNY in 1955, where he honorably served for 36 years in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island. During his time in the FDNY, he rose to the rank of Lieutenant and was awarded numerous medals for valor. George was a founding member of the FDNY Emerald Society and served on its board of directors for many years.
George would always say that 36 years seemed like 36 minutes! He would frequently talk about going back to the firehouse. He would also say that firemen are the only people on earth who get speeding tickets going TO work!
He met the love of his life, Jean Kathleen Mohr in 1944 and was lucky enough to marry her in 1951. They remained married for nearly 70 years until her death in 2021.
Jean and George moved to Staten Island in the 1950s and had three children – Jerry, Margaret and Barbara. He was an active and loving parishioner of St. Clare and Our Lady Star of the Sea. All three of his children attended St. Clare grammar school and graduated from Catholic high schools, which made him very proud. Unfortunately, his daughter Barbara Allen died from cancer in 2019.
George was a devout Catholic. He and his wife were very active in Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Charismatic prayer group. They held Bible Study in their home for many years.
George, 93, passed away on Wednesday, July 3, 2024 with family by his side. He is survived by his children – Jerry Allen and Margaret Behar (Seth) and his two grandsons, Patrick Allen and Liam Cox.
