A Mount Kisco (New York) native, he moved to Staten Island at the age of six with his parents (the late Marie Legato and Maurice Legato) and siblings (the late Joseph Legato and Rosemary Marcinek) in 1936.
At the age of 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in multiple parts of the country where he gained an appreciation for the honorable sacrifices our servicemen make. Once discharged, Anthony managed to maintain some honorable careers in the decades that followed. He served as a member of the NYPD and later joined the FDNY. He was promoted to Lieutenant before an early retirement in his 50s. In later years he served as an Airport Chauffeur, Driving Instructor, and worked in Luxury Catering where he met some famous figures of the 20th century.
A stickler for exercise and the outdoors, Anthony could usually be found taking early morning walks in the park or enjoying a Romeo Y Julieta cigar in the backyard; a radio and newspaper by his side. He also held a great appreciation for opera and indulged in community theater productions in his youth. In his 70s, he gained a newfound appreciation for the bonds he made with his local Firefighter community. As such, he became a member of the FDNY Staten Island Retirees Association and attended club meetings for the better half of fifteen years.
He loved to cook and eat Italian food. He was very proud of his heritage despite never visiting Italy. He was also fond of animals and indulged in aquarium keeping.
He would meet his late wife, Frances in 1981. Together they enjoyed many healthy and contented years until her passing in March 2023. He is survived by his four children (Risë Legato, Anthony Legato Junior, Mark Legato, Victoria Roina), his stepchildren (John Borrillo Junior, Nicole Pye), his grandchildren (Anthony Legato III, Kristen Sholar), and his great-granddaughter (Emilia Sholar) who carries his legacy.
