L.H. Garland, 87, of Stanley passed away after a brief illness on Sunday December 31, 2023. He was born in Mitchell County and worked on dairy farms at White Oak and Ledger, NC. After moving to Gaston County he worked at a furniture company in Gastonia with his best friend and beloved brother Edmond. Later he transitioned to carpentry work and worked for a construction company until retirement in Gaston County.
L.H. loved the outdoors, enjoying riding ATVs and camping with his loving wife Mary whom he lost in March of 2023 after 64 years of marriage. He relished walks in the woods with his nieces Carol, Becky and Joy, teaching them to identify and name the different species of trees. He was a gifted carpenter and took great pleasure in building bird houses that resembled log cabins. He enjoyed whittling woodened ducks, miniature furniture and old timey toys. He delighted in giving many of his carvings to family and friends that he knew would cherish and appreciate his works. He enjoyed his visits with his sister-in-law Jean and niece Jeanie and her daughter Lori and the wonderful food of green beans and corn fritters that he so enjoyed as well as their reminiscing of the old days and discussing the Bible. He spent much time on the phone at night speaking with his precious sister Kate, nephews Larry Dean and Gary, nieces Ann and Linda as well as his cousin Loyd. There were many neighbors that received his “Garland wisdom” whether they asked or not. And lastly, he loved his cats Booboo and Blu who kept him company, especially Blu who adopted him after momma left us.
L.H. is the son of the late Cora (Stevens) Garland and Holden Garland. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary (Ollis) Garland, his sisters Mae Michael, Lois Burch, Joyce Greene, Faye Clemmer, brothers Bill, Edmond and Shelby Garland.
L.H. leaves behind his daughter Judy Boylan and her husband Patrick, sons Scott Garland and his wife Danielle, Dennis Garland and his wife Janet, and his “best buddy” Nancy Russell. L.H.’s legacy includes three grandchildren, Alyssa, Zachary and Christopher. Grieving the loss of her brother is his sister Barbara Ormand.
