He is preceded in death by his devoted first wife of 29 years, Shelby Eubanks Snipes of Lancaster, SC., brothers Pete Snipes and Jimmy Snipes of Lancaster, SC, and loving grandson Cooper Snipes of Iron Station, NC. Shelby was a dedicated support throughout his military career. Upon his retirement they resided in Stanley, NC.
Carl Snipes was an esteemed Naval Officer with a remarkable career spanning 24 years; he left an indelible mark on the naval community and beyond.
Born on July 27, 1938, Carl demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment from an early age. He joined the Navy in 1952, embarking on a journey marked by unwavering dedication, exemplary service, and excellence. Carl was promoted first in class his entire career reaching the NCO rank of Master Chief Petty Officer in record of 13 years. He pursued his officer commission and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 4, commonly referred to as a “Mustang.”
Throughout his career, Carl served with distinction in various roles, showcasing his expertise, integrity, and devotion to duty. He navigated challenges with courage and perseverance, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues and superiors alike.
Carl contributed significantly to the Surface Warfare community demonstrating his exceptional skills and unwavering loyalty to the Navy and this great nation. He was a source of inspiration to many, embodying the core values of honor, courage, and commitment.
Off duty, Carl was known for bringing joy and camaraderie to those around him. His kindness, wit, and compassion touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Carl's passing leaves a void in the Naval community and in the hearts of his family, friends, and colleagues. Carl will be remembered fondly for his remarkable contributions, enduring legacy, and the profound impact he had on all who crossed his path.
Carl is survived by a daughter Lisa Cox and her husband Danny of Denver, NC, son Greg Snipes and his wife Tonya of Iron Station, NC, five grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, sister JoAnn Snipes and brothers Charles Snipes and Donnie Snipes - all of Lancaster, SC.
Carl found love again with Nancy “Judy” Cotchcroft from Gastonia, NC. Together they settled in Dallas, NC where they spent a happy 23 years. Through his love of horses, he developed a special friendship with Chase and Kayla Payne, who also helped provide with his care. He was known for his community and mountain cookouts and dances.
Carl spent his last year at Stanley Total Living Center in Stanley, NC. The family would like to extend a heartfelt “Thank You” to the staff of STLC for their compassionate and loving care for Carl.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday April 15, 2024 at Forest Lawn West Cemetery, 1408 Freedom Drive, Charlotte, NC. The United States Navy and the Gaston County Honor guard will render full military honors for Carl as a salute for his years of dedicated and faithful service.
