Bob Cullen was born June 4 th , 1956 in Rochester, NY, to Gerald and Grace Cullen. He spent hischildhood in Hamburg, NY. At the tender age of 12, he suffered the loss of his mother. He also lost his beloved youngest brother Bill as a young man. Bob is survived by his wife Paula Simon, daughter Regina, father Jerry (Marilyn), brother Gerald (Ann), sister Kathleen (Chris), brotherGreg, 10 siblings-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In 1982, Bob met the love of his life, Paula Simon. Bob and Paula lived in San Francisco,Singapore and, most recently, Stamford, CT. In October 2000,Regina, the light of Bob’s life,joined their family. Bob was a truly good man. He was a wonderful husband, dad, son,grandson, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend. Bob’s kindness, quick wit, realness, and generous spirit made him a friend to many.
Bob was a hard-charging man who lived life to the fullest. He started his career with theThomson Corporation in 1984, where he held a series of positions in the United States and internationally. In 1993, he became managing director in Asia, eventually being promoted to president of Asia/Pacific. In 1998, Bob was promoted to president and CEO of Thomson Learning International. Then, in 2002, he was named president and CEO of Thomson Scientific & Healthcare. He left Thomson in 2008 and worked as an adviser to private equity investors. Bob was a loyal colleague, mentor, and friend to many during his career. Bob served on numerous boards and was involved in many community projects. He was a Lasker Foundation board member; a Manhattanville College board member; a member of the International Research Foundation; a member of the Universitas 21 Global Consortium; and served on the board of directors of HCPro. In addition, Bob was active with international adoption, assisting orphanages in Thailand, and the Children’s Charitable Foundation. He and his family have been a Fresh Air Fund host family for many years.
Bob was an accomplished athlete. Among the sports he mastered were tennis, skiing, biking, and golf. He traveled the world to golf and bike. The week before his death, Bob vacationed with family in upstate New York, where he and his brother Greg biked 300 miles. Trips with family that involved water, mountains, skiing, and biking were cherished times. Bob died on July 31, 2015, following a basilar artery stroke, leaving us all shocked and saddened. He will be missed, as he was loved and respected by many. His legacy will continue in the hearts and lives of all who knew him.
