Born in Stamford, CT, she was the daughter of Concetta (Pensiero) and Giuseppe Mallozzi. As a young teen, she volunteered as a candy striper at St. Joseph's Hospital. She attended Katharine Gibbs School and was employed by Carol Belknap and Associates in Greenwich, CT. After raising her family, she was a merchandiser for Gibson Greeting Cards.
Josephine enjoyed a large vegetable and flower garden her entire life and cooking for her large extended family. Through woodshop classes, she refinished furniture by caning and rushing chairs. She knew how to sew, knit, and crochet and was a patient teacher to her children, and grandchildren. After taking piano lessons when she was 20, she bought Tommy Dorsey's piano. The piano has been in her home ever since. She brought music to her children through studies on the piano, other instruments, and visits to the theater, and opera in NYC. She is most known for perfecting everything she created, including her beautiful Christmas wreaths every year and the desserts she made for family gatherings or charity bake sales. Her athletic abilities were spotlighted in Life magazine as she golfed with her husband. In addition, she competed in tennis, skied with her children, and swam laps every week until she was 86. Josephine found joy for many summers at Tod's Point and Island Beach and traveled to Italy and many waterways and coasts of Canada, and the USA.
Throughout her life, she was a member of the Italian Center of Stamford and St. Maurice Parish.
She is survived by her children Laura Oncea (Samuel), Michael P. Volpe, Concetta E. Volpe, and grandchildren Samantha and James Oncea. Her sister Lucia Ambrosecchio (Michael), her brothers Ottavio Mallozzi (Andoneta), and Rosario Mallozzi. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Carmine Volpe, her sisters Benedetta Mikulsky, Jean Velez, and Ellen Mallozzi.
In lieu of flowers please make donations in Josephine M. Volpe's memory to the Darien YMCA, 2420 Post Road, Darien, CT 06820.
