Harold was born on October 30th, 1926, in Pleasant Hill, Missouri, to Ulysses and Rita Smith. He was the youngest of 6 siblings: Carl, Charles, Alice, Margaret, and Dorothy. After living in Missouri for the first 3 years of his life, his family moved to Charleston, South Carolina.
He was married to Yolanda Silva of Greenwich on December 15th, 1956.
He was a proud World War II veteran, having served in the Navy as a Second Class Petty Officer on the USS Hill destroyer, and the USS Matagorda sea plane tender, between 1942 and 1946. After his service in the Navy, he worked for Pitney Bowes in Stamford for 36 years, retiring as a superintendent in 1988. During his time at Pitney Bowes, he lived in Stamford, Ridgefield, and Greenwich. Eventually, he settled down in Rowayton. His biggest passion in life was golf, but his other hobbies included boating and fishing on the Long Island Sound. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, St. John’s Catholic Church in Darien, and the American Legion. He always put his family first and was especially proud of his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Yolanda Smith of Rowayton; his children Kathy and her husband Mike Pasquarella of Darien, Dave Smith of Greenwich, and Matt and his wife Tara Smith of Darien. He is survived by six grandchildren: Kevin, Kyle, and Colin Pasquarella of Darien; and Matt, Lindsay, and Ryan Smith also of Darien. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 4 pm to 7 pm on Thursday, June 19th at the Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home at 2900 Summer Street in Stamford, Connecticut. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am on Friday, June 20th at St. John’s Church at 1986 Boston Post Road, Darien, CT. Interment will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien.
