George R. Payne Jr., 52, died June 26th at Stamford Hospital surrounded by his loving family following a brief battle with cancer. Born in Stamford, CT on August 13, 1964, George was a life-long resident of Stamford. He graduated from J.M. Wright Technical School in 1982 with a concentration in plumbing. For 29 years George served as maintenance foreman at the Sterling Farms Golf Course where he had a special relationship with those he worked with.
George was an avid sports fan who enjoyed watching his beloved Yankees, Rangers and Giants. He was a former volunteer fireman with the Springdale Fire Department for 15 years. It was during his time as a volunteer that he was instrumental in restoring a 1933 Buffalo Fire truck. George touched the lives of many and will be missed by all.
George is survived by his parents Dorothy and George R. Payne, sisters Deborah (Adolfo) Sanzari of Madison, CT and Lisa (Paul) Tuccinardi of Stamford. He is survived by one niece, Alyssa Tuccinardi, and nephews, Stephen Sanzari and Paul Tuccinardi. In addition, George is survived by his uncles, Duncan (Liz) Payne of Norwalk, CT, Rodney (Robin) Payne of Willis, TX and his aunts, Evelyn Jensen of Gautier, MS and Dawn Cerretani of Sulphur Springs, TX. He is survived by cousins Kris Jensen of Clinton, CT, Jimmy Cerretani of Yantis, TX, Rick Jensen of Arvada, CO, Christopher Payne of Prospect, CT, Bryan Payne of Wallingford, CT, Denise Simmons of Sulphur Springs, TX, Tiffany Malkin of California, Michael Payne, Matthew Payne and Steven Payne of Willis, TX. He is predeceased by his uncle Harold Jensen and cousin Tracy Payne.
His family would like to give a special thanks to the ICU staff at Stamford Hospital for the special care given to George.
The family will be holding calling hours from 4pm to 8pm on Wednesday, July 5th 2017 at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer Street, Stamford, CT. A Funeral Service will be on Thursday, July 6th 2017, 11am, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 884 Newfield Avenue, Stamford, CT. Burial will follow the Funeral Service at Fairfield Memorial Park Cemetery, 230 Oaklawn Avenue, Stamford, CT.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Bennett Cancer Center, 1351 Washington Boulevard, Suite 202, Stamford, CT 06902.
