Elizabeth (Beth) Owens Gambino, beloved wife of Joseph, mother of Laura Croft (and Daniel), Kathy Gambino (and Jude Sanchez), Mark Joseph Gambino (deceased), J. Todd Gambino (and Darunee), grandmother of Danielle, Jimmy, Nicole, Jennifer and Siena Rose, passed away on February 7, 2011. She is survived by her husband, children, grandchildren, a brother, Eugene Owens and a sister, Ruth Matthews, many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and great nephews.
Beth, also known as Betty to her Missouri relatives, was born on November 3, 1934 in St. Louis, to the late Nina Garner and Clarence Owens. She graduated from Ironton High School and several years later, joined Eastern Airlines as a stewardess, where she flew up and down the East Coast from New York City to Atlanta and Miami. It was in Atlanta in 1958, that she met Joe who was working there as an engineer. It was love at first sight. They were married in Atlanta, GA on October 18, 1958 and have spent 52 happy years together.
Eventually Beth and Joe settled back in Connecticut, first in Ridgefield and then in Stamford where she lived, worked and raised her family for the last 41 years. Beth became a real estate agent in 1974 and worked for Realtech Realtors and then Country Living Associates until about 2004. She had many interests, including tennis, bowling and in later years, golf, where she not only played the links at her homes in Florida and Vermont but also avidly followed every televised tournament. She also enjoyed completing crossword puzzles and playing pinochle and bridge. Beth was an active member of the Silverliners (Eastern Airlines flight attendant group) for many years and was very involved as a long time parishioner of Holy Spirit Church.
If there were just three words that could sum up Beth's life, they would be: family, prayer and friends. There was nothing more important to her than her husband, children, and most especially, her grandchildren. Her Catholic faith sustained her through many trials and tribulations. There was not a day that went by that Beth was not saying her rosary, going to Church or watching Mass on television. She was especially devoted to our Blessed Virgin Mary. Finally, there was nothing Beth liked better than a good party, many of which were hosted by she and Joe at their homes in Stamford, Vermont and Florida. Her fondest recollections are from unforgettable times spent with various groups of friends, who are all so special and filled her life with joy and meaning. She will be sorely missed.
