Born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Ann was the daughter of Kendall and Lurye Massie. She attended the University of Wyoming, earning a BA with honors in 1966 and an MA in English Literature in 1967. She was awarded membership in Mortar Board, Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Beta Kappa.
After Wyoming, she attended the distinguished School of Communication and Information at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Rutgers awarded her a master’s degree in library science in 1968.
Upon graduation from Rutgers she joined The H.W.Wilson Company, which was located in the Bronx in New York City. No longer in business, it published indexes used by libraries. She began as Assistant Editor for Wilson’s Bibliographic Index and retired as Vice President for Editorial Policy after more than 30 years with the company.
In addition to her professional career, she applied her cataloging skills to volunteer work with the Ferguson Library and the Stamford History Center.
An avid birder, she spent several seasons traveling back and forth from Stamford to Milford Point, Conn., where she and her husband erected protective cages around the nests of Piping Plovers. The Plovers’ nests, built on open beach, are vulnerable to damage by beach walkers, dogs and other beach traffic.
She is survived by her devoted husband Peter and her sister, Dr. Mary Jane Massie of New York.
No memorial service is planned. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation to the Ferguson Library, 1 Public Library Plaza, Stamford, CT 06901.
