Percy E. Pondexter

On Thursday, December 9, 2021, God called His servant, Percy E. Pondexter, home. He was one of ten children born to the late Ruffner and Evelyn Pondexter on April 21,1928 in Ronceverte, West Virginia. Percy was educated in Greenbrier County, West Virginia and graduated from Bolling High School in 1946. He became a truck driver in Lewisburg, West Virginia from 1947 to 1952. Later he moved to Washington D.C. where he was employed by the CIA. Percy became a member of the Sargent Memorial Presbyterian Church where he met and married the love of his life, the late Elnora Allen. This union was blessed with over 52 years of love. They moved to Widewater, Va. in 1961 and became active members of the Oak Grove Baptist Church where he served in various capacities. Over the years he served as a Deacon, Trustee, Treasurer of the church and a Missionary. He was also a member of the Men’s Choir, Gospel Choir, Men’s Ministry, Men’s Club, and he served as a teacher in the Christion Education Ministry. He was an Ambassador of Faith and an Ambassador of Oak Grove Baptist Church. Percy also represented Oak Grove Baptist Church as a member of the Progressive National Baptist Convention. Percy was a founder and the first Black President of the Widewater Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department. He was a lifetime member of the Stafford County Branch of the NAACP and a 32nd Degree Mason of Mecca Temple No.10 of Washington, D.C. Percy and his late wife, Elnora, were members of the Trailer Club and loved to travel by car throughout the United States and Canada. Percy’s zest for life will long be remembered by his loving family; two God daughters, Priscilla Miller and Kyrthlyn Rhoda; one sister-in-law Ruth Harris of Temple Hills, Md.; One brother-in-law, Apostle John Allen (Gloria) of Fairfax, Va.; one ‘special niece,’ Margaret Holland of Severn, Md.; and one ‘special’ cousin, Thomas Harris of Stafford, Va. He was preceded in death by five sisters, Clara, Evelyn, Louise, Mary Francis, and Shirley Ann; four brothers, Ruffner Jr, John, Charles, and Albert. He also leaves to mourn his passing a host of five generations of nieces and nephews and a bountiful array of relatives and friends. GOD SAW God saw you were getting weary, So, He did what He thought was best, He came and stood beside you, And whispered, ‘Come home and Rest.’ You gave no one a last farewell, Not even a goodbye.
