Christopher John Hampl

Christopher was born June 19, 1962 to Edward Hampl and Margaret (Burke) Hampl. He spent his entire life on the east side of St. Paul or its adjoining suburb of Maplewood. He was inordinately pleased that he always lived within a few blocks of Lake Phalen.

He attended St. Thomas and St. Paul Academies and was a very proud graduate of the University of Iowa. While he was at Iowa, the football program enjoyed one of its greatest periods of success under coach Hayden Fry and consistently qualified for Bowl Games. Christopher played a role in the Hawkeye’s success– he paced the sidelines at all home games holding the cords from Coach Fry’s headset, making sure that the coach did not become entangled or trip.

Christopher’s ancestry is half Irish, a quarter Swedish, and a quarter Czech. He was keenly interested in family genealogy, as well as Minnesota and, particularly, St. Paul history. He knew all of St. Paul’s streets, neighborhoods and playgrounds, and usually had an anecdote to tell about someone who lived in each area. During the last week of his life, he drove all of the streets surrounding West 7th Street while his brother Eric, equipped with a plat map from 1891, directed him to dairy farms and residences of his Czech paternal ancestors.

Christopher is predeceased by his wife Colleen (Green) Hampl. The two married in the Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church in Minneapolis on November 21, 1992. Married for 24 years, they were a loving couple who fully supported each other and their careers. Both Christopher and Colleen were strongly motivated to assist others, and they focused their careers and their personal relationships around that ideal. Colleen was a special education teacher in District 916 that served St. Paul and its northern suburbs. In the 1980s, Chris began working as a Certified Financial Planner with Ameriprise, where he stayed for his entire career. He worked hard for a large number of clients, primarily teachers.

Christopher is survived by his brother Eric Hampl, sister-in-law Elizabeth Lockwood, and nephews Alex and Kieran Hampl. He is also survived by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Michael and Kathleen Green, and nieces Sarah Green and Allison Farb; brother-in-law Jeffrey Green, and nephew Russell Green and niece Suzanne Infante; and four great nieces and two great nephews. He was close to and very fond of his six cousins and their children.

A visitation for Christopher will be held Saturday, November 16, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Wulff Funeral Home, 1485 White Bear Ave N, St. Paul, Minnesota 55106, followed by a celebration of life at 12:00 PM.
