Dear Mr. Kawin,
I keep missing you. You are in my heart and presence every time I play the piano. Please know that your notes, your voice, and your sound are being remembered and hope they are also heard through my music.

My heart is broken.  My fondest memories with Phillip was being his final student of the day between 1986 and 1989 as part of the pre-college Saturday evening classes I took at MSM.

He remains the foundation of all I know and teach as a composer and pianist.

My memory of Prof. Philip Kawin  still remains in my heart even after 15 years. When I was studying at MSM for my Master's Degree, I encountered him almost everyday at school because my teacher's studio was right next to his. He was the one who left school at very late night, practicing after long day of teaching.
It seemed like he had no break, but he was always full of energy talking about music, friendly and thoughtful to everybody he encountered. Under such a competitive environment in a music school, he was extraordinarily a warm-hearted person who showed true love for music and people. 
I had a hopeful plan of  knocking on the door of his studio to say long time no see when visiting New York, which won't happen..
An important lesson of beautiful human being first before music playing that I had seen from prof. Kawin will still be one of the greatest gifts I have received from MSM.

We met in the faculty lounge at MSM.  I didn't know you, but you quickly began conversing with me.  You were  infectiously friendly and charming.  It was refreshing.  There was no pretense, just a nice person - speaking kindly to another human being.

I met Mr. Kawin when I was a clueless teenager trying to figure out how to actually pursue a career in music, and was completely flabbergasted when in our first lesson together, I didn't get past the first 6 notes of Debussy's 'Feux d'artifice' for three hours!  A few days later, after gathering my gumption and playing the same piece in a recital, he came up to me and said 'For someone who has absolutely no idea what they're doing, that was a great performance.'  I was thrilled, embarrassed, intrigued...

Fast forward a couple years and I was a student at the Manhattan School of Music, which I chose to attend specifically to study with Kawin.  Over my 6 years of study with him there, I developed the skills to become the musician I am today -- transforming from a struggling hustler with a massive inferiority complex to a pianist with the arsenal of skills and the sense of self to pursue my dreams and achieve them.  

Looking back now as an adult and a professional, I am in awe of Kawin's profound gifts as a pianist and educator.  His approach to the instrument is unique, profound, and, frankly, brilliant -- I feel truly blessed to carry on this pianistic legacy.  At the same time, the dedication and care that he took with his students was remarkable.  Our studio truly felt like a family and he allowed each of us to blossom in our own way -- musically and personally.

What an eccentric, one-of-a-kind constellation of brilliance and grace you were, dear PNK.  I hope that we, your students, are up to the impossible task of following in your precious footsteps.

Thank you for changing my life.  May your memory be a blessing.

Hearing the news about Dr. Kawin's tragic passing is such a shock, and it's difficult to believe that he has left us. Phil and I were jurors for several of the Juilliard Piano Concerto Competitions in the past few years, and it was always such a pleasure to see him and catch up afterwards.  His energy, enthusiasm, and smile were infectious, and I will always cherish these special memories. May you rest in peace, dear Phillip, and know how much we all miss you.

You have lived inside of me for so many years. I am aware every day that my joy in playing would not exist without the gift you bestowed on me.  I was lucky- I  met you before you began teaching at MSM, and your schedule allowed for us to work together for 2 hours every day of the week, every day of the year- for seven years. Though I was already able to play, I felt in my core that I was lacking something essential, the real thing, the thing that all great pianists have to have acquired at some point- that absolute technical foundation which cannot be replaced by anything else. You knew that it would take daily extraordinarily meticulous work to achieve this. Your willingness was something I’ve never seen before or since. It was your refusal to stop before we got there, it was your faith in me, your confidence in yourself, your joy in the process, your joy in sharing your knowledge and the results that showed up.  I knew that all you wanted was for me to acquire that freedom which would bring joy.  It has. You live inside of me every day, and I am awed by the experience we shared.  My gratitude to you is immeasurable.  I say goodbye with great love.

I have studied with Mr Kawin for 6 years at the Manhattan School of Music for my bachelor's and master's degrees. I am the pianist and the person today because of Mr Kawin.  He taught literally every finger of mine how to behave, but never just for the mechanical improvement but always to serve the great music we love.  He treated every music and human with dignity and love.  
Mr Kawin, I want to say million thank yous to you, I wished I did that more when I saw you at school, I'm sorry. I am forever indebted to you. I will keep practicing to make you proud. 

I met Phillip a number of years ago and we would occasionally get together while I was in town. Had a 2008 memorable alumni brunch, I volunteered to create a three note instant composition, if someone would donate $1000 to MSM for the honor of picking three notes. Phillip volunteered. It was extremely generous of him to do so. And I was honored, he was I think head of the piano faculty at the time. In any case I share my condolences, 

I've always believed the quality of our lives is directly proportionate to, quality of the people, in our lives. We are all blessed to have know Phillip.

You entered MSM mid semester, having studied in Paris, then at Juilliard with Adele Marcus, and to MSM with Dora Zaslavsky. With a twinkle in your eyes, and charming nature, we had many classes together. With entertaining music sessions and discussions in the practice rooms, it was clear how much the piano was a part of you. How you loved critiquing fellow piano students! Even if it’s been the 3rd day since you left us, I still can't believe it. I think of you every single time when I sit in front of the piano or take out a score from my bag.  

I can't forget the first time we met, at a music festival in Beijing, I played a Rachmaninov's etude. You taught me in that lesson so carefully and patiently.  From every technical detail to the each concept of practicing, you all fully passed it on to me. At that time, I was deeply touched by your rigorous academic spirit.

I can't forget that when I was admitted to Manhattan School of Music, you cared for me and taught me like a father. You always leave the school very late, and I always can see you downstairs in the school in the midnight . I can’t describe my pleasantly surprise when you appeared in the concert hall and listened to my performance in the final recital of the Bach class and the harpsichord class. After that, you summed up all the problems in my performance for me, and I deeply feel your great support for your students. You have paid so much attention for us, you always devote all your energy to music and teaching. In the future, I will also teach many students. As your student, I‘m determined to learn and pass on your dedication and rigorous teaching attitude, as well as the spirit of selfless care for students.

I can't forget that Thanksgiving dinner in 2019, your students from all over the world gathered together. You said to me: “it is very important to enhance everyone's feelings in a studio.” We talked about music and life with each other, and I really felt the warmth from a big family.

There are too many memories between us, and there are too many things I want to talk with you. Although you have left us, your spirit will be passed on forever in this world! Hope in your next world, you can reunion with your parents, Professor Koch, and your beloved composers, etc.

Whether it was getting me heaps of new socks when he found out I started running, or bombarding me with photos after my sister's graduation, or debating menu items endlessly with me and my mother, Phillip was always there for us. I started receiving lessons from Mr. Kawin back when I was in 4th grade before I was even an official student at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division, and have had the greatest privilege of being under his mentorship and guidance for 8 years. My memories with Mr. Kawin are filled with all the anecdotes that he has shared with me during lessons about his life, his peers, and his former and current students. These anecdotes have not only served to help me understand the musical technique that he was teaching me, but they have also been a wealth of life advice for me.
Looking back, I can say without a doubt that Mr. Kawin has had the greatest impact on my life. He has forever shaped my musical tastes and has trained my ear to better appreciate classical music. He has even taken me with him to Italy several times to attend music festivals, something that I would have not imagined doing. I remember being in a practice room right under the room he teaches in Italy, and he came down to my room all of a sudden and gave me a short impromptu lesson. Even to this day, I hold onto all the notebooks and scores that hold all the notes that Mr. Kawin has painstakingly recorded during lessons.
To this day, I deeply regret not being more proactive with musical studies as I should have back when I was his student, and for not being adequately prepared for some lessons. Despite all of these shortcomings I had as a student, Mr. Kawin continuously shown to me a patience that rivals no other and I am truly grateful that he never gave up on me and continued to encourage and push me as a musician. Though I am not a professional musician, I hope to continue Mr. Kawin's legacy in any small way I can by practicing the piano with the teachings that he has left with me through the extensive notes he has recorded onto the notebooks and the scores I have brought to lessons over those precious 8 years. 
My mother and I are eternally grateful to you and will deeply miss you, Mr. Kawin.

I was deeply saddened  and shocked to hear the news about Phillip’s untimely passing. I knew Phillip for many years, since my days as a student at MSM. A wonderful and joyful person, good and supportive friend, a dedicated musician and teacher who gave his soul to his students. Last I saw Phillip was three years ago, we judged together a competition in Boston. I send my deep condolences to his family members, to Sunny, to his friends and students. My dearest Prof. Kawin,

Today is your funeral day. Even till now, it’s still too hard for me to believe that this thing had happened. The date 9th of September in America which is 10th of September in China is my country’s Teacher’s Day. I wanted to say Happy Teacher’s Day to you but didn’t have chance. But I know someday I will meet you again, at the end of my life. I wrote down your legend and tradition of your studio in my article along with the music you are proud of. Thousands of people in China had seen it and sent their deep condolences to you. I think you would be glad to see it. This is one of a few things that I could really do for you at this point. I asked all my students to learn studio’s tradition and your stories, they studied with their hearts and admired your music with greatest sincerity. My students and I had all observed a moment of silence for you on that special date. Your spirit will be within myself and shine gloriously in my music, my teaching and my rest of life.

I remember the Graduation Message you wrote to me in this May for accomplishing my second degree with you. You said, ‘Perhaps one fine day in the future, you will send your pupil to study with me, who will then be a great grand pupil!! Now that is what we call lineage.’ I never forget this, and must convey this lineage.

In this Summer Break, I shared my joy of first appearance on the stage of Grand Theater to you around a month ago. Your encouragement still sounds so clearly.

There are deep condolences from my parents they would like to convey as well, “I would never forget and thankful forever for all your education and help

I am heartbroken and still in disbelief of the passing of my dear teacher, Prof. Phillip Kawin, who was such an incredibly loving, supportive, thoughtful, wise, and caring person. I was 9 years old when I started taking lessons with Mr. PK, and he completely transformed the way I thought about music. I can confidently say that I wouldn't be the pianist I am today without him.
But what made Mr. PK great wasn't just his amazing insight in the classroom; it was also his above-and-beyond support for everyone he cared about. There were so many moments we shared outside of the classroom. I'll always remember our trip to Italy where he said that he came up with the idea for me to play Prokofiev's 1st Piano Concerto in a dream. I'll also always remember our trips to the pizzeria there, where we would have a competition to see who could handle the most peperoncino on our pizza. He would always go to my performances whenever he could, no matter how where they were or how important they were. I specifically remember he went to one of my gigs, and he asked to be dropped off at his studio in MSM at 1:30 AM instead of at his apartment because he had to practice a Beethoven Piano Concerto for an upcoming concert in Moscow! His desire to go to my gig until late at night even though he had to practice for an international concert truly demonstrates how supportive he was.
Reading what everyone else wrote about him is what has really stricken me after his passing. The beautiful thing about Mr. PK isn't just how undying his encouragement and support was for me, but for all of his students. After reading the memories that everyone else shared about him, it is so clear that every single one of his students have similar stories about him. He was such a universally loved and respected person in and out of the classroom because he deeply cared about everyone that was important to him, and he would fight tooth and nail to ensure that everyone he cared about would succeed and flourish.


Prof. Kawin was my only piano teacher for 10 years at MSM Precollege. He played such an instrumental role in shaping my love and appreciation for music. Never afraid to share his unfiltered opinions about anything, Prof. Kawin had an utterly unique ear for tone production, his greatest pet peeve being "pianists who bang the piano oh so horribly". One of the most enduring memories from my lessons with Prof. Kawin was his insistence that I use the weight of gravity to "sink" into the last two chords of Brahms' g minor Rhapsody. I never quite managed to create the wonderfully rounded sound that he could.

The last time I last saw Prof. Kawin was when I invited him to give a small master class in Boston.  I remember vividly when he exited the Red Line stop at Harvard Square,  looking lost and confused, in a rush to get to his master class on time, yet stopping to give a generous donation to a homeless man selling newspapers. After the class, he wondered aloud whether he was too harsh on one of the performers. Such was his boundless empathy, which was apparent in every single 2 hour plus marathon lesson with him.

In the years to follow I was always amazed by Phil's artistry, devotion to the students (and not only his) and empathetic engagement with everyone he encountered.

Philip Kawin was my piano teacher of nine years (1994-2003) at MSM Prep. There is no single person more responsible for developing my musicianship and technical proficiency. He was a teaching savant in every way, only exceeded by his patience. Each Saturday, he would repeat the same directives over and over again (my dad could attest), because I did not adequately practice them--what a surprise.

I found myself going through these perfect markings in my scores. They are, inimitably, *exactly right*--the phrasings, dynamics, articulations, pedaling. The man knew exactly how music should go, as if he were transcribing it from the heavens. Age 9 to 18 me couldn't even comprehend this. I always felt tremendously guilty that I never "made it" in piano, but I'm certain I would not have carved out a career in music, and proceeded with such certainty, without his ~300 lessons. He attended my bar mitzvah in 1998, and years later, my 12-year-old photo was amongst the collection on his studio wall. There were never one-hour lessons; there were only 2, 2.5-hour lessons, however long was necessary. Time stopped in his Room 228 studio, and the music ruled. 

Those memorializing him share similar sentiments to mine. He was a kind and generous man of the highest order, and he will be greatly missed, but his legacy is gigantic. All of my students are indirectly his. I am tremendously sad, but proud that I owe much of my success to him. RIP, Maestro.

We have lost a great man. Phillip was the first person who came to me when I began my work as President of Manhattan School of Music in 2005. We immediately become friends. He cared deeply about his students, his colleagues, and MSM. No one worked harder for the school. He was the soul of MSM. Vicki and I were blessed to have him as a friend.
Phillip was caring and loving. He had uncanny, extraordinary
 gifts as a teacher for bringing out the individual character and musical core of each of his students. 
His was a life well and fully lived. We only wish he could have stayed with us longer. May he rest in love in God's arms.

I am shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden, untimely passing of Phillip Kawin - Teacher, Mentor, Colleague, and most importantly, dear friend.  I've known Phil since the early 80's where as a fellow MSM student, he was already gaining a reputation as a fine teacher.  A teacher with a unique passion for understanding the mechanics of piano playing.   As I had unsolved issues in my technique, I went to study with Phil in my early 20's and it was transformative.  Phil dissected and drilled every aspect of my technical approach with unique insight, patience, and dedication.  The lessons were never over until there was a positive change!  Of course the technical work was always in service of sound and the music.   After 5 years of lessons, this culminated  in my winning the Thelonious Monk Competition, and he was particularly proud of teaching winners of major classical AND jazz competitions.   Year's later, I met my wife Lesley at a party where we all played music together.  She told me before she got to know me, she first fell in love with my piano sound.  So I truly owe Phil a debt of gratitude!

Phil  was also an important advocate for my joining the faculty at MSM. then advocated for me to join the MSM Board of Trustees as Faculty Board member.  He also enlisted me to serve on the Faculty Council, where as its president, I witnessed his talents as a leader, his attention to detail, his encouraging all members to participate, his building camaraderie with dinners and wine.  

I last spoke with Phil a few days before he died.  I had no idea he was so sick.  I told him about sharing the "Kawin approach" with my students in the Juilliard Jazz program. I could "hear" the smile on his face, very pleased that his ideas were being passed on. 

Phil - MSM will not be the same without you.   My life won't be the same either.  Wherever you are, know that you have a huge loving family of students and colleagues whose lives you've touched.  Your legacy will live on.

Especially for my dear Sunny,

When I lost my esteemed teacher, Zenon Fishbein, the only words that consoled me were from his eldest son, "For those of you who did not know my father, I am sorry for your loss."   Fortunately, there are so many who have been and continue to be touched by Philip's compassionate understanding and generous love.

In April 2002, when I was 17, I was faced with a choice between studying at MSM or Peabody, so my mom and I flew from California for trial lessons. I so wanted to live in New York, and I was desperately hoping the MSM lesson would go well.  Unfortunately, when I played for the (unnamed) teacher (who had already accepted me from the audition), he turned up his nose and said he'd changed his mind. And then he charged my mom $200 for the lesson he didn't give me. We were so shocked and upset. As we left, this unnamed teacher said, "Who was your 2nd choice?" I said, "Phillip Kawin." He said, "Well, maybe he'll take you instead."

So we went back to MSM and waited outside Mr. Kawin's studio until the door opened, as one student came out and another came in. We introduced ourselves to Mr. Kawin, explained why we were there, and asked if I might be able to play for him. True to form, he said yes - he always had time for everyone. He gave me a full lesson (on the Chopin 3rd Ballade), offering such positive and constructive feedback - it was so exciting. He then refused payment and instead marched me and my mom down to the Admissions Office right then and there to add me to his studio for the fall. 

That was you, Mr. Kawin - always generous, encouraging, enthusiastic. Nothing was impossible (except running on time). When I decided to move on to other teachers 3 years later, you weren't particularly pleased, and I'm sorry that I didn't reach out, all these years later, to catch up as adults and to tell you what I hope you already knew: that by taking a chance on me that day in April 2002, you changed the whole course of my life. I am so profoundly grateful. I hope heaven is filled with all the turtles, watches, hairspray, and music you could ever hope for.

I am Evelyn Yang, a student of Philip Kawin. I met him when I was eight years old and was Professor Kawin's youngest student. Philip Kawin was a kind-hearted man who taught with passion and care.  He treated me like his grandchildren. His death shatterd me because he was such a passionate, and tenderhearted man. His teaching led to a bright future for me and his style will never be forgotten.  I hope that I can play a piece for him in the near future.  Philip Kawin will be my favorite teacher forever.  God bless Philip Kawin.

News of Phillip's death are as terrifying as my memories of him are beautiful. Many years of working side by side with Phillip at the Piano Summer at New Paltz left such happy residue. I cherish memory of dear Phillip and send my deep condolences to the family and the loved ones.

It was with great shock and sadness that I heard of Phil’s passing. Having spoken to him only a few weeks ago there was no talk of him being sick. Phil was the consummate musician dedicated to the beauty and fidelity of his playing and teaching and therefore one of the finest pianist I have known. I will miss him greatly and his phone calls, even his butt calls many times. Even though I couldn’t always work on his piano I was proud to be involved in his last recording.

 Dear beloved Prof Kawin, 

I am totally feeling heartbroken to know your passing. I remember the last call we both had in the summer, you’ve said “Cheryl, you should write to me often because I miss you so much, I hope that your most important part you’ve been missing in school the most is me!” That recall has been instantly got my heart shattered into pieces, because I felt guilty of not spending enough time to talk with you casually when you were always there for me. All I knew was to focus my attention more into work, technical skills, while not willing to open myself up to you  for a casual talk. I owe you and myself a deepest apology for not knowing you truly as a person rather than a tutor when you were still alive. 

You were a true work ethic when comes to teach, your dedication for the whole studio was truly amazed me. You would spend an hr and a half for my lesson till late night at school, giving me a generous amount of lessons until I feel fully prepared to complete my jury over the last summer. Indeed, you were born to be a true educator who makes use of the spiritual teaching gift of yours throughout a lifetime. 

I believe that I have grown so much for the past few years and most importantly, to built myself up a level of maturity on playing and thinking musically. Thanks to you, to my beloved Prof. Kawin, it was truly a privilege and my proudest moment in life to become your student. You may always be remembering to be the most lovingly and unusually remarkable piano tutor and a pianist forever.

The shock of learning about Phillip’s sudden passing this morning here is overwhelming beyond words. I am deeply sorry for all who were his students at the Manhattan School of Music. Phillip and I shared a unique friendship, rooted in our studies with Adele Marcus. Since the early 1990s, we had performed in various scenarios, judged competitions together, but it was our phone calls and conversations when we would meet that were deeply endearing. He shared his love for helping his father, and the trials and difficulties of that time, and would talk about Adele and the affect of her in his playing and teaching. We shared a special and deep respect for each other and admiration based on music, and caring about the traditions for the next generation. He always asked my opinions of his recordings, sound, etc. That he respected my opinion was something very humble and will remain close and dear to my heart. Along with many, I shall miss my friend. I will remember how happy he was when he lost weight and ate healthily. He was very proud of that accomplishment. Play for the great composers now in Heaven, my friend.



This past year hasn’t been easy for all of us. I was extremely lucky to have families and friends who have been healthy during these unprecedented times. I wish this luck would have continued for my final year in NYC, and I believed I would have the best year of my life so far until yesterday, when I was informed of the passing of my beloved teacher, Professor Phillip Kawin.

I have studied with Professor Kawin for 4 memorable years, and at times I realised that even though we were ‘only’ teachers and students of MSM, we were actually a big family. The annual thanksgiving dinner celebrations, the surprise birthday parties, and the conversations in the hallways near his studio. Conversations with him were the best part. He once asked: “do you see that picture of Rachmaninoff’s hand and my own, aren’t they alike!” His way of teaching Russian music was unlike anyone else. He taught me the importance of fingering ( Beethoven 111, Ravel's Scarbo)- During one of his classes a Gym Promoting number called him, he picked up and hanged up ( He said to me  I'm doing the fingering for Beethoven Op.111 that's enough exercise for the whole day), he taught me tips and tricks to create beautiful and harmonious music, and believed that sound is the most essential element and important product of piano technique.
The last online class was on my birthday, the 18th of June, and it was the final time I talked with him. He asked me to send pictures of Sydney and my birthday party. He always loved Australia, and his angel's place recital hall poster was always a spotlight within the studio.

Prof Kawin, you are a shining star to so many musicians around the world, we will remember you as an idol, and we will tell our friends, sons and daughters about the unending Kawin Legacy. We will always remember the Kawinsm you taught the studio, and we will pass it down to our students. Kawinsm will live long with the generations to come!

Thank you for helping shape who I am as a person. You never ceased to have my back, and you were always supportive of my goals in life. I cherish the memories of our lessons, and still remember them like they happened yesterday. You were a model example of how to love your people, and this is something I will carry with me the rest of my life. I take comfort in knowing you are performing Brahms for Phinneas once again.

Those of us who studied with Phillip Kawin can all confirm his wonderful attributes. His incredible dedication. His invariable kindness. His willingness to always, always go the extra mile for a student. And - most importantly - his stunning gifts as a piano teacher. How many of us had those miracle lessons where Phillip would untangle the key problem in a difficult passage with a well-chosen sentence or two and a quick demonstration? And if his first explanation didn't hit the mark, he had a different way of explaining it. And still another. I've never known any teacher with such insight into the difficulties that a pianist faces at the keyboard. He was equally at home in improving all aspects of a student's playing, from technical micro-details to subtle points of tonal control, from articulation and artistic pedaling to broader issues of phrasing and shape - and how to make it all come together. I treasure my memories of Phillip and feel great sadness that he will not be around to inspire another generation of pianists.


Whether it was getting me heaps of new socks when he found out I started running, or bombarding me with photos after my sister's graduation, or debating menu items endlessly with me and my mother, Phillip was always there for us. We will never forget how wonderful it was to have him with us, and he will live on forever in our memories. Thank you, dad.

The first time I met Prof. Kawin was at a friend’s graduation recital at MSM, where he was the judge for that recital. I have never seen him before, but he talked to me with kindness and warmth, and showed me his studio. I was impressed by his collection of turtles, and the portrait of his teacher Dora Zaslavsky, and of course, two beautiful Steinway Grand Pianos. 

A few months later, I was introduced to Prof. Kawin through my previous teacher Miyoko Lotto. I had a few lessons with Prof. Kawin at a festival in the summer of 2011, exactly ten years ago. We worked on Brahms Six Pieces, Op. 118, which was his specialty! The lessons were eye opening to me. He asked me “Can you show me how do you walk?” —which seemed strange to me but it was probably the first thing he taught to many of us. I was impressed by the magic sound he played, the way he explained… Many things I have never thought before. They turned me on as clicks, and those lessons are still so fresh memories as it happened yesterday. 

It was my fortunate and proud to study with him at MSM and at CUNY-Graduate Center when I pursued my DMA over the years. Whenever I have something, I always played for Prof. Kawin. I knew he always had new discoveries, new studies, and new inspiration, and he never disappointed me. I truly appreciate Prof. Kawin, for everything he taught me as a pianist, as a musician and how to be a generous, dedicated, passionate, and patient teacher like him. He was demanding but somehow he helped his students to achieve their highest potential. I remember how Prof. Kawin explained that why he collected turtles. “There are two things: one is to remind him of patience, the other is because turtle represents for longevity…” He will be very missed and long living in our heart.

Dear Mr.Kawin,

One of the best things happened in my life is to have been known you as person and as a student so that I was able to taste another world of what sound is, passion is, what music is, and life is. 

You always opened another door for my ears to be able to explore another layer of something, whatever it is, whether it is art, music, life, politics, or just a street name, or a drink, a food, a name of restaurant or someone that you just bumped into , it always impacts something for my eyes to be able to see what is invisible,  which is too transparent to be shown. You made what is invisible visible, what is not heard audible. You always revealed what was hidden into something, like a magician. 

Even it already has been few years since we saw each other, your words, your spirits, the seeds planted in me are still resonating in my heart so actively and lively. Because it is something that is not easily perished but genuine. 

I miss your twinkling eyes and happy smile. I know you needed the cup of iced coffee always because you were always lacking of sleep from long lessons after midnight or thoughts about your students.  Even if you blamed me that our lessons get too long because we talk too much, I know you truly believed that without life, there is no music.  Your life was art itself, and music was your life. 

Although you are not with us any more, your art, your words, your thoughts will be with us forever and continue to give birth to music. All the memory of who you are, will continue to live and make so many smile as you always wished.

I’ll never forget your impish smile, kind eyes, and your never ending wonder at all that is beautiful and profound. It was always about the music. You shared everything you could, and you wanted to share so much more. There just wasn’t enough time. 
I’ll miss so many things including those late night dinners with greasy Chinese food in Boston.

As one of Mr. Kawin’s pupils, I used to sit in front of room 319 every Tuesday night, waiting for a pause to knock on the door. Although that black double door is closed, whether there was a sound or not, I always feel the energy and warmth behind it. 

It was his passion, to music and his pupils. 

I know, today or tomorrow, if I stop by and sit down for a minute, I will hear people murmuring inside, and I shouldn’t disturb them because it is the time for him to teach.

There is a tradition in our studio, on thanksgiving, all his pupils will be invited to a dinner at Bettolona. Mr. Kawin was responsible for the first toast. It always goes:

“For Music”

The word “music” here, in my perception, has a different definition. It refers to water. The water can be a brook lying in a forest or a drizzle veiling the hill. It can be a storm blowing up or an ocean at rest. It also can be fire, wind, and electricity. Sparkling bubbles in a glass of champagne or melting butter on a piece of hot bread. It means love, happiness, and sorrow. It means playing ‘in the key.’

Our lessons usually finish after midnight, and we will have a short walk after that. When we were ‘sneaking out’ from the main entrance, Mr. Kawin always emptied all his snacks to the doorman. He was able to call every staff straightly by their first name or nickname, including cashier, cleaner, piano technician, etc. He was obsessed with the renovated front gate of our school, as well as the lobby of the dormitory: Every time we passed by, he stopped to watching it with glaring pride. 

Mr. Kawin was a concert pianist, recording pianist, educator, accomplished turtle collector. A very sloppy person who couldn’t find a charger at his home but knew every inch of MSM. A strange man who spelled gute Nacht’ with umlaut but read every Asian student’s name accurately. A prominent artist as well as a father of a big studio.

Dear PK,
Your mischievous wit will be missed, with that flash of smile and twinkle in your eyes. In your studio you guided my musical and pianistic development with such care and thoughtfulness (“Y’know, Amir, I was thinking about that one passage in the Bartók last night…”), but you also taught me by example how to be a tireless learner — how to trust that through experimentation I can always find the solution to any problem. Thank you for that and for all the extra time and brain energy you devoted to me and my studio mates. Thank you for the memories of Thanksgiving dinners at Carmine’s with all your students and the endless plates of pasta and glasses of wine. Thank you for the chats in the MSM hallways, and the late-night run-ins at Pisticci’s. You were always late to our lessons but it’s because you couldn’t walk down a hallway without someone wanting to talk with you, and because you couldn’t end a lesson just because the hour was up. Your humanity inspires me and I will carry that inspiration with me always. May all our love and respect for you be infused (like vodka!) into your next journey.

We are stunned and saddened by news of Phillip's passing. He was such a caring, dedicated and kind colleague, teacher and artist-citizen. Phil was and will always be a part of MSM's heart and soul. It is hard to fathom that his physical presence will no longer be a part of our daily life in our beloved school. But his spirit will remain with us forever and we will never forget him.

I don’t recall a single interaction over 30 years (including when he was in the hospital after being in a taxi cab accident) when I wasn’t greeted with a smile, and a positive outlook from Phil. His passion for the piano was equally matched by his devotion to his students and his support of the extended MSM and piano community. His passing is a huge loss but his legacy will be long lasting. 

I met Phil in first grade at what is now Reed School,  "Little Ladue" back then.   Although we were in different classrooms all through grade school, I knew him quite well due to time on the playground and at lunch.   We lived just two streets apart.  In fifth grade we had a combined classes sort of talent show, and all those who are reading this know even before I write it who stole the show.   All in attendance had their lower jaw hanging in amazement as Phil played at a level far beyond his 10 or 11 years.  He had a way of making others feel important, and I believe that we are all fortunate in knowing that we were important to him, and him to us.  I will remember forever the Saturday and Sunday mornings waking earlier than I might have wished to the sound of a bouncing basketball in our driveway just below my bedroom window.  My house was one of the closest to his with a hoop that was of accurate height and had a good net, and where he knew he was always welcome.   What a great guy who will be missed by all who knew him.  Rest in peace my good friend.

My dearest Professor Kawin,
You used to give me a tour of your turtle collection in your room right after my lesson. Even though I did not tell you, it was my favorite thing when I was seven years old at MSM. You were a benevolent teacher full of love. I would never forget the turtle tours in my entire life. I have never thought that you would not be by my side when I graduate MSM. I looked forward to seeing you today on the first day of Precollege... For seven years, you taught me how to perform as a pianist and encouraged me to learn music constantly. I would never forget your bright smile when I would come for a lesson. I will remember your love forever when I see the turtles that you gave me as a gift on my piano.

Dear Phillip, Today I coached one of your young students in the PreCollege on Chabrier waltzes for two pianos. The look on his young face said everything I feel, an amazement of how life,—in this case a Saturday PreCollege goes on regardless that someone passes. Yet throughout the MSM building, in your students , in our colleagues, sadness pervades. You are so missed hours only after you’re gone. Steven and I spent a sleepless night grieving the loss of your friendship. We will forever remember your humor, spirit and dedication.  Forever remember the love you sent us always, Robin

I remembered adding Phillip to the preparatory faculty (now pre-college) of the Manhattan School of Music.  He  attracted many high quality students and was an inspiration to them. He will be sorely missed.

I will always treasure the years I  studied with Mr. Kawin at MSM.  He was the kindest and most hardworking person I know. He was always gentle and encouraging, patient and wise. Music and his students were his life….. I am who I am today because of all of my teachers, Mr. Kawin is one of them. I will miss and love you forever.

My dear professor, I’ve never thought that the last time we spoke on zoom was my last time I saw you. You would not only always smile but always push my lesson to 1 hour and 30 minutes. During my first lesson with you, you sent me one of your CD’s for me to listen to and I fell in love with your playing. You also signed the CD for me the next time I saw you. During my last lesson even when you were sick, You still finished the class. I never thought that this would be my last class with you, I feel very sad deep inside my heart. During my time learning with you, Not only have you taught me how to be a pianist but taught me how to be a person.

	I send my deepest condolences to the Kawin family, and I will really miss Phil.  He was a bright light at the Manhattan School of Music, always cheery and emanating an amazing positive energy. He was the greatest negotiator and was always there when I needed an ear at school.  
	We met often in the faculty lounge during our short lunch breaks and I always looked forward to seeing him.  As a teacher, musician. and leader of the faculty council for many years, his dedication, talent, warmth of personality, and generosity will be greatly missed by all at MSM.

Next week, we were able to meet again in five years. My happiness to be able to seeing him again has all collapsed..
In the past, 5 years ago, when I was suffering from pain, He worried and deeply thought of my situation as his thing and shed tears for me. When I wanted to give up everything, He hugged me warmly and cheered me on sincerely.
I cannot even explain how much I loved him as a professor.
I was happy to was student of him, It was a greatest honor beyond words.
I will cherish his warm heart and precious memories with him in my heart.

My dear Professor, I’ve never thought about the last time we chose repertories on zoom was the last time I saw you, hear you. You always smile and call my name mildly.  last winter I came to New York for audition, in the concert hall I saw you sitting in the jury table turned to me a smile, I decided that I want to be your student. So that day I looked around the door of your office for a long time finally waited for you out, you invited me into the office to listen to me play and took me as your student, but also for me to fight for a scholarship. You asked me why do I want to study with you, I said because you look like my future teacher, you laughed and didn’t believe, but that’s what I really was feeling.  I came to New York to study with my dream just because of you but now my dream suddenly shattered on the ground. Studying with you during the year I like you more and more, you are sometimes a little wayward old man, but very serious and enthusiastic, all day and night teaching students. Although will often be criticized by you, but you have given me a lot of encouragement for my progress, told me to be confident, once I met some problems in life depressed, you sent me an email to be happy. You taught me how to practice, to listen with my ears, to feel and express the timbre. And you did not have time to wait for me to understand them all and show them to you. I have been working hard this summer to do what you have told me, and I thought very soon I can show you my progress, I wanna make you happy at my first lesson. You haven't had time to listen to my graduate recital, I have not had the opportunity to even have a photo with you. I was look forward to seeing you in a few days... How coincidentally, I played farewell movement of Waldszenen that day…And that’s a teacher’s day, perhaps like my aunt said, heaven needs you, you are a very, very special teacher. We’ll all gather together again in one day, please wait for us, ok? Your sometimes stupid Jiewei.

I only knew you for a short time, but speaking with you was always a joy and brought a calmness to my day. From all the memories posted, you made a huge impact on many.

He was a true example of how human being should be. He was always filled with a unique sense of humor, professionalism and profound understanding of music. Art was his religion and he truly dedicated himself to it! 
I can not write about him, because every-time I start writing or see his pictures my eyes fill up with tears. He will always be remembered with his child-like, naive smile!
I always told him that he should spend more time resting, because I ALWAYS saw him working. Now you will finally rest!

What fun we had when you came over for dinner and we all spoke English with a German accent, which you were simply brilliant at, despite not knowing a single word in German.  Thanks for your musicianship and everything you gave your students. You will be deeply missed this side of the universe!

I am totally shocked and sad to hear of the passing of my very special New York piano professor, Phillip Kawin.(only aged 64), especially because I didn't know he was sick. I met him when I was 16 yrs old in Australia. He helped me to receive a scholarship to MSM and I moved to New York at age 19 (1994) and studied with him during my 5 years there. He was so supportive, like a father to me during this time. We have kept in touch via FB since my return to Australia, 20 years ago. His commitment and passion for teaching was amazing. Finding meaning in every phrase of music and solving technical challenges was like an intriguing puzzle for him. He would try many different approaches until he found the correct one for each student. He was kind, talented, funny, so generous and dedicated to his craft as a performer, adjudicator and teacher in the US and internationally. He will be remembered and missed by so many. I named 1 of our 8 music studios at Kidko Performing Arts the Phillip Kawin Studio, when we opened.

 It was a great fortune to have met you and remained friends for over forty years. 
You are a dear friend and Nils and I will miss you very much . 

It was the first day of Kindergarten at Little Ladue School, we were friends immediately. We lived in the same neighborhood & I would sleep over at the Kawin's home often. He only spoke French in his home, as his parents were both savants. Observant Orthodox Jews, I would be taken with Phillip to Sabbath morning services by his mother, O.B.M., so that I would become what I was suppose to be.
Classical Music & Opera was the flavor of music experienced while over at their Home. He was the only person that I knew that already had a Life Path at 7, of Studying at Juilliard then to be a Concert Master at the Steinway. I do remember when the family traded their Bosendorfer for their first Steinway concert grand, what an Instrument!! Phillip & his Family will always be a fond memory in my Life.
