Mary is survived by her children Richard Jr. Ernst, Steve Ernst, Kathie Ernst and Christie Kovacs, along with her 4 beloved grandchildren. Mary was predeceased by her grandson, Justin; her husband of 64 years, Dr. Richard E. Ernst Sr.; and her two sisters. She was born in St. Louis in 1927 as Mary Louise Moser, daughter of the late Louis and Marie (nee' Hall) Moser.
Mary was passionate about education and the arts. She graduated from Maryville University in 1948 with a Bachelor’s degree in Art History. Later in life, she earned her Master of Fine Arts degree from Washington University.
She particularly loved working with metal. Her efforts began with jewelry, notably her signature bangle bracelets with rolled edges, and evolved to encompass mid-size decorative pieces and larger sculptural forms. In her words, her work was “inspired by landscapes and the sea,” distinguished by contrasting textures, rippling surfaces and undulating lines.
Mary was recognized by the local artist community on numerous occasions. Her metalwork was displayed at the St. Louis Art Museum and Craft Alliance, along with several juried shows. Her work was also featured in the American Craft Magazine.
She shared her passion for art and proclivity for world travel with her husband, Richard. Post-retirement, they traveled widely. Locally, they attended metalworking classes at the Meramec Community College. Mary loved learning and inspired countless young artists with her tenacious spirit and art.
Mary supported efforts to improve the social welfare of her community. She was a longtime supporter of PBS, along with the St. Louis Symphony, the St. Louis Art Museum, the St. Louis Zoo (she had a particular fondness for the big cat exhibit) and the Botanical Gardens. She was a devoted member of The Our Lady of the Pillar Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any of the above organizations or to Meramec Community College Art Department.
Private interment Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. A Memorial Mass is being planned for a later date.
