John was a high school classmate of mine at Normandy . He was a dear friend and a tremendous human being  . He was genuine ,sincere and truly down to earth .  Although he was a leader on campus and a star athlete ,he remained approachable and made you feel better just by being in his presence . Dear Janis and family,  You May not remember me but I was Floyd (Lew) Hoffman’s wife.  I just learned about John.  I’m so very sorry!  Floyd and I admired John so much!  He had such a cute personality, great smile and was so pleasant to be around.  You have our deepest sympathy and are in our thoughts and prayers.  In Sympathy, Carla Hoffman and family.

He was such a sweetheart. He loved everyone.He had a beautiful family. Wonderful kids and a wonderful wife. Will miss him very much.


All my Love and Condolences to John's Family.

The thing that I keep remembering when I think about John is his voice, he had a very distinctive way of saying things, it was always upbeat and was very expressive and genuine.

The one fishing story I have is the time we were in a tournament and of course we won, but... we had use our prize money to pay for a ticket he got because he forgot to renew his boat trailer license. We did have a lot of fun at the tournament.

I will miss him dearly.

John never had a bad day.  Always upbeat and enthusiastic. Always smiling. And at 6' 5" or so, bigger than life.

We started doing business together some 35 years ago and became good friends. Sometimes I thought we were brothers from a different mother. 

I will miss our warm, cheerful phone calls that always began, "Stewart here, Steve how are you?" Then we had a conversation that could touch on a little business, sports, the kids, family, politics, barbecue, and other issues of the day. 

John and I shared dozens of luncheons, breakfasts, and more. While we tried but never could solve the world's problems, perhaps we came close to tweaking one or two just a bit.

I learned a lot from John during the past three decades and know he is in a very special place.

Thank you John for including me on your long glorious ride.  You helped make me a better person.

John was definitely someone that had "it".  He was good looking, athletic, smart, and, boy could he tell a story. More importantly, he was a man who was strong in faith that loved his family dearly.  John has provided me with a few fishing stories over the years. He taught me how to fly fish.  Or, tried to anyway.  He taught me how to set fire to a classic Chris-Craft boat in the middle of the lake while trolling.  He showed me how to cut the hook out of his father-in-law's (Harold) ear lobe.  I also loved talking to John about barbecuing. Especially the smoker.  I would take his tips and advice and try to use them in my own backyard - never quite achieving the same results.  I'm not sure John knew, or could imagine, how much of an impact he had in so many people's lives.  My condolences to the entire Stewart family.  I can confidently say that I will never have a barbecue without John crossing my mind.

John was my basketball coach from 5th-8th grade at St. Catherine’s  and  “The Vikings” summer ball team where I played with his son. 

One memory I recently came across that Dave might like to have —I found a highlight dvd my dad had made of the St. Gabriel’s tournament that we won (2001?) and Dave broke the tournament scoring record over 4 games that had been held for 20+ years...by no other than his dad! It was a pretty cool moment as 13 year olds and this 5 minute highlight video includes the scoring record announcement at the end where John is just booming with pride. Happy to send the DVD to you if you’d like.

My condolences to the Stewart family. He had a huge influence on my early teen years with a lot of great memories around basketball (and some discipline) 

John was well liked and thought  of in high school. He was a friend to many and a nice guy.  So sorry for your loss.  Michelle (Grace) McBride

On a spring afternoon when we were in second grade Dan and I were walking across the Natural Bridge Road railroad bridge on our way home from school.  I was wearing a railroad engineer cap that was my favorite.  A sudden wind gust blew the hat off of my head,  over the railing and down to the tracks below.   Losing that hat meant trouble for me at home but so did going under the bridge to fetch my hat.  I was very upset.  And then John appeared from across the road and with a smile calmed me before going to fetch my lost hat.  I knew John for many years after and  his smile  was always there for me.

My thoughts are with the family I know he cherished.  I've never met a person that sincerely cared about others, his faith, and love for family.  I considered John  a leader of what the good in people should act like.  He was a great co-worker, leader, and teacher.  Why does God always take the good people.

Love is immortality. Love is one.  Love is the whole.  Love is an endless sea that you fall into.  And once you fall into it, you can’t fall out.
 
All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.  Your Dad is gone from your sight, but never from your hearts.  We are truly saddened because we know that your Dad will miss his grandchildren.  

May the cherished memories of your Dad, and the love of family, continue to surround you and give you strength in the days and years ahead. 
 
My thoughts and prayers are with you to assuage the grief of your family – BUT - Grief never ends  ..  it changes  ..  it’s a passage, not a place to stay.  Grief is not a sign of weakness, nor a lack of Faith – It’s the price of Love.

I have known Janis since early childhood and first met John over 40 years ago.  I always enjoyed being around John and our conversations.  John and I shared a love of history and I will miss our discussions.  John was so well read and conversant that he challenged me, and that is only one facet of his life.  He was a good friend, a loving husband, father, grandfather and all-round family man.  He will truly be missed.

I am so sorry to hear of John's passing,  I was looking forward to his BBQ Book he was writing, I have so many fond memories of the whole Stewart family, fishing trips, parties and bbq's galore.  Love you all!! You are in my prayers!!

You said I should have had  a radio talk show , because I always take the opposite opinion just to get the discussion going. 

How many pinochle games and you and Fred always seemed to get the BEST hand. While Janis and I tried giving  signals to each other.

I will really miss John and his fun sense of humor!  He always had a smile and a fun story.  My favorite memory of him is that he had us over for a BBQ and I fell in love with his dry rubbed ribs.  They were the best!  I took such an interest in them that John helped me select my first smoker, and he taught me how to properly prepare and  smoke ribs.   He answered endless questions, recommended an award winning rub and helped me  until I felt I got it down.  He also shared his favorite BBQ restaurants with me and his favorite, became my favorite.  I think about him every time I use my smoker and I always will.  Our  heart hurts for Janis, Kay & David and all who loved him.  It seems so unfair that someone so special was  taken way too soon.    You will be sorely missed but we are sure you are catching up with some special people in heaven about now.

John, you were always bigger than life-always with a smile on your face & a joke on your lips- I have shared happy times & sad times with you- We’ve shared vacations, backyard & poolside BBQS & Christmas Holidays that I’ll always remember-You & Janis, whom I’ve known since birth have been like family-I’m going to miss our bantering back & forth-Heaven will never be the same with you,Harold & Al there together!

I met John over 25 years ago and am proud to have considered him a friend  since that first meeting.  That is not a unique statement as anyone who met John became his friend.  In the industry that John and I worked in, I can honestly say that I never met a more honest, decent individual.  These qualities were only surpassed by his likeability and absolute devotion to his church and family. 
I visit St. Louis three or four  times a year and am scheduled to visit again in two weeks.  It will be the first time that I will not be having lunch with John.  I dread that trip.
My sincerest condolences to Janis and the family not to mention the many people who called John a friend.

In 1984  My wife Carole Ann ( as the family calls her ) Janis and John and I went to New Orleans for the Worlds Fair.  We all went to this  store that was near the place we were staying, to grocery shop.  John and I are in the check out lane and John turns to me, Hey Fred when  did you retire from the Football Cardinals? Naturally I am used to this banter so I played along as we discussed my career with the Cardinals, several people in line and the check out boy all wanted to know my name.  So manny more times to remember.  Another time we were at a Plantation Home that had a  restaurant and we heard someone say it was for sale so at the bar while we were having  cocktails,  John proceeds to tell the bartender,  while I was at the restroom,  that I was out scouting to buy property, when I retire from playing Football,   so when I came back
I had to play along and give her  ( the bartender)
My name and ask for the owners name etc.  there are so many more stories.  John I will
