Gay was known for her generosity of spirit and love for her family and community. Gay attended Mary Institute, starred in her school plays, and spent a summer at Pasadena Playhouse. She graduated in 1955, at which point she went on to Sophie Newcomb College for a year and then returned to St. Louis to marry and raise a family. Later, Gay became a successful travel agent and married the love of her life, Hank Ross, who predeceased her. Gay volunteered for Jewish Hospital, working on the Clover Ball, for the Book Fair, and also at Westwood Country Club, serving briefly on its board, and she was passionate about giving back to the community. Gay was also a terrific party planner.

In addition, Gay's memory lives on with her brother, Bud Hirsch and his wife Marian Hirsch as well as Gay's sister Carolyn Michel and her husband Howard Millman, and the entire family of Hank Ross.
