Bussmann, Donald William, M.D. passed away after a brief illness on Janaury 17, 2011 at the age of 90. Born in St. Louis, Missouri to Harry T. Bussmann and Catherine (Berns) Bussmann; beloved husband of the late Elsie (Drummond) Bussmann for 65 years and father to the late Donald (Yvonne) Bussmann, Jr., M.D., Carl (Patty) Bussmann, M.D., Patsy (Tom) Cecil, Suzie (Michael) Ramey and the late Mark (Mary) Bussmann; proud grandfather of 14 and great-grandfather of 16.
He received his education at St. Louis University H igh School, the Hun Preparatory School in Princeton, New Jersey and graduated from Princeton University in 1942. he graduated from Washington University School of Medicine in 1945 and then served for three years as a Medical Officer in the United States Army.
After several years of medical practice, he became associated with the St. Louis University School of Medicine. He helped found its Department of Cardiology, became Director of Cardiac Auscultation Laboratory, authored several journal articles and served as an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine. He was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor Medical Society and a member of the Princeton Chapter of the Society of Sigman XI. Donald and Elsie were Knights of the Holy Sepulchre.
Donald was highly instrumental in the founding of the St. Louis Priory School. He was a member of the Board of Directors, and an instructor for 15 years after helpintg start the Department of Biology, and in 1992 received the Luke Rigby Award for Outstanding Service to the School.
Visitation Services will be held Sunday, January 23, 2011 at Kriegshauser West Mortuary, 9450 Olive Blvd., Olivette, MO 63132, 2--6:00 p.m. Funeral Mass to be celebrated at St. Anselm Parish, 530 S. Mason Rd. 63141 Monday, 10 a.m. with reception to follow there immediately after the mass. Interment will follow the reception at Calvary Cemetery, 5238 W. Florissant Ave. 63115. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Louis Priory School.
