John Thomas McHenry, 75, died Sunday, January 24, 2021, at the Inova Fairfax Hospital, Fairfax, VA. He was born in Buffalo, NY, on January 11, 1946, to the late Robert T. McHenry and D. Jean Perkin McHenry.
John lived in the Buffalo and Jamestown, NY areas until the family moved to Crescent Park, Ontario, Canada. He attended elementary school in Crescent Park and then transferred to continue his education at Canisius High School in Buffalo, NY, graduating in 1963. During his high school years he participated in athletics including cross country running.
John attended St. Mary’s University, Halifax, Nova Scotia for two and a half years prior to enlisting in the United States Army on February 1966. After completing basic training John attended Officer Candidate school where he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in March 1967. He served in the Vietnam War from February 1968 to February 1969 with Company B, 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. (Deeds not Words Regulars, by God). He was awarded the Bronze Star with V, a Purple Heart, the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Gallantry Cross with Bronze Star, Army Commendation with V and various other service medals and ribbons.
Upon leaving the army he returned to St. Mary’s University to complete his degrees. He worked in the banking industry in Ontario before relocating to the Washington, DC area. He worked in the printing industry before establishing his own financial investment company.
He met and married Jamie Ruth Harwell on May 27, 1989. They were happily married for over 31 years. During retirement they enjoyed traveling, attending army reunions and visiting family from coast to coast.
John was the oldest in a family of ten children. From his siblings there were numerous nieces and nephews who affectionally called him Uncle John. He loved his nieces and nephews as if they were his own children.
John is preceded in death by his parents, sisters- Doris Dolhan, Catherine Zent, Michelle Schmidt and Marilyn Wilhide- and a brother Robert McHenry
He is survived by his wife, sisters, Jean Lockwood, Maureen Simpson (Joe) and Mary Pat McHenry, and brother Kevin McHenry (Evelyn).
He will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA, on July 12th 2021 at 2:45pm.
