John Joseph Kelly

John was born on May 30, 1940, in Dover, New Jersey. He was the cherished first-born son of John David Kelly and Anna Elizabeth Wolosin. John spent an idyllic childhood with his parents and younger brother Joe in Rockaway, New Jersey. He attended Morris Hills Regional High School, where he played football, basketball, and baseball, and was active in Student Government. Following his graduation in 1958, John attended the United States Military Academy at West Point. He graduated from West Point in 1962, beginning a career in the United States Army that lasted 25 years. John was a proud veteran. He served honorably in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. John earned a master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering from Texas A & M University. John’s military career took him to many locations, including Korea, Germany, and various bases across the United States. John retired as a Colonel in 1987, whereupon he kept himself busy with family life, golf, travel, charities, and faith-based organizations.

John started his family when he was united in holy matrimony to Kaye Rasmessen at Bolling Air Force Base in 1965. Together, John and Kaye built a beautiful life filled with love and cherished memories. John and Kaye raised three children and welcomed seven grandchildren into their family, which was filled with love and laughter.

John, better known as “JJ” by his buddies, was a faithful and devoted Catholic. JJ was deeply involved in the Knights of Columbus, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.

John was preceded in death by his parents, his younger brother Joseph Francis Kelly, and his devoted wife of 48 years, Kaye Rasmessen Kelly.

John is survived by his three children: Kathleen MacDonald of Gainesville, VA; Scott (Kathleen) Kelly, of Littleton, CO; and Brian (Robin) Kelly of Erie, PA. Fondly known as “J Papa Cool” by his grandsons, JJ was the proud grandfather of seven grandchildren: Sean (Liz) MacDonald; Douglas (Emily) MacDonald, Olivia Kelly, Kyle MacDonald, Sofia Kelly, Gavin MacDonald, and Brigid Kelly. JJ became a great-grandfather this year as his first great-grandson, Callum MacDonald, was born on his birthday. John’s family was the heart of his life, and he took great joy and pride in the accomplishments and happiness of his loved ones.

John Joseph Kelly leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and dedication that will be remembered by all who knew him. He will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace.
