John "Jack" Edmund Haberle

John “Jack” Haberle, age 72, of Annandale, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, December 6th, 2023 in Fairfax, Virginia. Jack was born in West Orange, New Jersey to John and Florence (Allen) Haberle on July 24th, 1951. He went to school at West Orange Mountain High School. He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a BA in electrical engineering and an MA in software engineering. Jack was very proud of his Alma Mater, and would not so subtly hint to his nieces and nephews that they should go to RPI and become engineers. Jack married Lisa Sanfilippo in 1994. As a child and teenager, Jack spent countless hours at the park playing basketball with his friends, which he insisted contributed to his horrible adult knees. He was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed visiting National and State Parks, hiking, and camping in his pop-up trailer. As a young man he hiked large portions of the Appalachian Trail, seeing lots of wildlife, and even once awakening to a mouse in his beard. He greatly enjoyed walking on the beach in Longboat Key, Florida. A true believer of always challenging the mind, he loved reading and crossword puzzles, and he did the crossword in the paper every day. He also loved tending to his garden. Jack was always up for a casual gathering, and he and Lisa would host an annual chili-cookoff which became the hot ticket in their neighborhood. Never one to get involved in organizations, Jack stepped up to be the president of his neighborhood civic association when no one else volunteered. He felt the job was too important to his neighborhood, and he worked tirelessly as an advocate for his neighbors and community. Jack had a very small family, but he was fiercely loyal to his friends, who became his chosen family. Jack is survived by his wife, Lisa, his two daughters, Melissa and Jane, and his sister, Patricia Fitzmaurice. All will miss his dry sense of humor, quick wit, and brilliant one-liners. Memory Eternal. A memorial gathering for John will be held Saturday, December 16, 2023 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield, VA 22151.
