Jack David McCalman, Jr., died at age 73 on June 14, 2024, after numerous health issues. Loved and respected by his family and friends, he was preceded in death by his parents, SSgt Jack David McCalman, Sr. and Helen Bryce Walden McCalman, his older brother, Michael Braxton McCalman, his first cousin Marsha Cosby Cetti of Carrollton, and his first cousin Martha McCalman Gleaton Brown of Summerville, North Carolina. He leaves behind two first cousins, Regina Cosby King of Newnan, Georgia and Ellen Gleaton Cowne of Colbert, Georgia. He was born on September 7, 1949, in Troy, Alabama.
Jack David served in the U.S. Army from 1971 to 1990. Jack’s service included an overseas assignment to South Korea where, in September of 1980, he was assigned to the Joint Security Area Duty Office located on the line that separates North and South Korea. After that, he was assigned to the Washington D.C. area working at the Pentagon. He served in the U.S. Army for 20 years, retiring as a Master Sergeant in 1990. his awards included the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, two Army Commendation Medals, six Army Good Conduct Medals and the National Defense Service Medal. While on active duty, Jack earned an Associate’s in Science degree from the University of the State of New York in 1981. After retiring from active duty, Jack worked for Xontech, Inc., a defense research contractor, as an Administrative and Security Professional. Xontech was acquired by Northrop Grumman in 2008 and Jack continued to serve as a Security Officer until his retirement from Northrop Grumman in 2011. After enjoying full retirement for a few years, Jack returned to Northrop Grumman in 2013 as a security consultant. He served in that capacity until 2017 when he retired permanently.
Jack was a skilled bridge player and an active member of the Lincolnia Senior Center in Alexandria, VA. He was an avid coin collector and a member of the American Numismatic Association. He worked tirelessly with the National Guaranty Company (NGC) to certify, exchange, and research coins.
He will be in the care of Demaine Funeral Home on Backlick Road in Springfield, VA until such time as he can be interred at Arlington National Cemetery where he will receive military honors. A separate announcement will be made when he will be laid to rest and all friends and family are welcome to attend this service.
