Irene was born in Nuremburg, Germany to Stephen and Margaret Shadder on March 21, 1949. She graduated from Arundel High School in 1967 and joined the workforce soon after. She married Joseph Stegall on August 12, 1972, in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Odenton, Maryland. She worked as a civil servant for U.S. Department of the Army for 35 years. She was an avid quilter, crafter, and baker. She enjoyed sharing her talents with Camilla Hall, a retirement home and healthcare center for the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and her church, St. Michael’s Catholic Church.
Irene is preceded in death by her parents, Stephen and Margaret and her best friend Teresa Shoppert.
Irene is survived by her husband Joseph, her son Jason Stegall and his wife Stephanie, her daughter Brianna Quinn and her husband Cory, her brother Stephen Shadder and her sisters Glenda Shadder, Michell Tucker and Maxine Wrzesien, and her grandsons Caleb Quinn, Layne Quinn, Orin Quinn, David Stegall, and Liam Stegall.
Visitation will be 12:00-3:00 on Thursday, January 26 at Demaine Funeral Home in Springfield, VA.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 on Friday, January 27 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Folmar, officiating. Burial at Arlington National Cemetery will follow at a date to be determined. Arrangements are by Demaine Funeral Home.
Memorials may be given to Camilla Hall (camillahall.org) and St. Michael’s Catholic Church.
The family of Irene wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Annette Bicher, the Inova nurses who provided her care in both the oncology clinic and the hospital, Capital Caring Hospice, the Catholic chaplains at Fairfax Hospital, and the priests of St. Michael’s Catholic Church.
