Beloved wife of the late William A. Caruthers, Sr., a veteran of World War II; mother of William A. (Becky) Caruthers, Jr., Bea (Ken) Logsdon, the late Michael (Rosemary) Caruthers, Patsy (Erich) Floyd, Larry D. (Susan) Caruthers, and Aurelia Shaughney; grandmother of 17, great-grandmother of 29, and great-great-grandmother of 4.
Aurelia was born in Roanoke, VA. She was an all-star basketball player at the Copper Hill School growing up. After her husband passed in 1979, she went to work as a sales associate in several women’s clothing stores & boutiques, finally retiring at age 84.
Aurelia’s Baptist faith was one of her defining characteristics. At Congress Heights Baptist Church and others over the years, she taught Sunday School & Vacation Bible School, worked in prison & nursing home ministry, and contributed to missions work including serving as president of the Woman’s Missionary Union for many years.
Her family and her personal relationship with her Lord, Jesus Christ, personified her life. She was a devoted mother & grandmother acting as a teacher, mentor, and guide to her beloved family for which she prayed daily by name. She will truly be missed.
Friends welcome on Thursday, February 3 from 4-7 pm at Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield. A service to celebrate Aurelia’s life will be held on Friday, February 4 at 10:30 am at First Baptist Church, 7300 Gary Street, Springfield. Interment to follow at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery in Maryland.
