Allan “Ike” Edward Martin, 91, of Springfield, Virginia passed away Tuesday July 10, 2012 at Inova HealthPlex in Alexandria, Virginia. Mr. Martin was born March 13, 1921 in Wheeling, West Virginia to the late Max Richard and Mollie Belle Martin. Predeceased brothers are Paul, William, Robert and Richard Martin. Mr. Martin is survived by his wife of 62 years of marriage, Vivian; a son, Gregory of Springfield, a daughter, Cherylen and husband, Thomas, and a grandson, Sean of Harrisonburg, Virginia. Mr. Martin was honorably discharged from the Army of the United States January 14, 1946. The campaigns and battles he served was the Ardennies Rhineland Central Europe. Rank: Sergeant 465th Military Police Escort Guard Company 7th Army and an M1 rifle Sharpshooter. He received the American Theater Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal. Mr. Martin was Director of the Office of Compliance and Civil Engineering, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the U.S. Department of Labor, Washington D.C. He began his career in 1950 with E.I. Dupont De Neumers and Company in Wilmington, Del., as a safety engineer. In 1954, he took a position in the same capacity with Todd Shipyard Corporation in Houston, TX, and in 1959 he went with the Department of Labor in Houston. Later he was assigned to New Orleans, La., and then to Washington, D.C. Mr. Martin was a Master Mason in good standing of Springfield Lodge No. 217. He was a member of Kena Shriners-Legion of Honor, Merrifield, VA and Scottish Rite of Freemasonary, S.J., USA - Valley of Alexandria Orient of Virginia, Elks Arlington-Fairfax, VA No. 2188, Potomac Court No.4 Order of Amaranth. Other affiliations included: Fort Meade Officers Club, St Stephen Presbyterian Church, ordained Elder, Building Chairman Houston, Texas, Park Place Lodge Houston, Texas, West Virginia University Alumni Association/Emeritus Club, West Virginia Varsity Club Mr. Martin graduated from West Virginia University with a BS Degree in 1949 and a MS Degree in 1951. Playing offense and defense for the 1940-1942 Mountaineer football teams, Mr. Martin earned the nickname “Hinge Hips”. The family will receive friends Friday July 27, 2012 at Demaine Funeral Home in Springfield, Virginia. The casket will be closed. Masonic service begins at 6:30 pm, visitation concludes at 9 pm. Funeral service will be held 1:00 pm Saturday July 28, 2012 at Grace Presbyterian Church in Springfield, Virginia. Visitation at Rotruck-Lobb Funeral Home Mancinelli Chapel in Morgantown, West Virginia will be held 7:00-9:00pm on Sunday July 29, 2012. Burial with full military honors will be held at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens 10:00 am Monday July 30, 2012. Memorial donations in Mr. Martin’s name may be made to Grace Presbyterian Church 7434 Bath Street Springfield, Virginia 22150.
