Wanda Lorraine Burgess was born to the late James Edward Bruce and Mary Alice Bruce on November 1, 1946 in Boonville, Missouri.
At an early age, Wanda began early childhood education in Buffalo, Illinois. Wanda continued her elementary and high school education in the Springfield Public School district when her family relocated to Springfield, Illinois. She graduated from Springfield High School in 1965.
Wanda gave her life to Christ at the age of 13 at Zion Missionary Baptist Church; and was baptized by the Rev. Dr. Nigel L. McPherson. Later in life she united with New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. Wanda re-united with Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where she attended until her passing.
Wanda retired from the State of Illinois, Secretary of State after 30 years of service. In addition Wanda also worked part time at various department stores in the Springfield area. She had a kind and generous heart and always enjoyed helping friends and family. Her hobbies included shopping and dancing where she won several step competitions.
She was a member of The American Legion post 808 Women’s Auxiliary and Sarah Price Temple 808 in the city.

She was called home on April 28, 2023. She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents, and her parents.

She leaves to cherish her memory; two sons, Jerald Wayne Bruce of Springfield and Lorenzo Bruce of Decatur, Illinois; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren; two sisters; Mildred Irene Boldon and M. Elaine (Lanie) Meredith-Bailey (Willis B.) of Springfield; one nephew Robin Meredith, three neices Rhonda Jones, Tracey Meredith and Deneaqua Leitner, six great-nephews,; three great-nieces; and a host of other relatives and friends.
