He was born on November 13, 1934, in Springfield, the son of Robert and Edna Mae (Adloff) Cappellin. Thomas married Jana Greene on November 26, 1969, in Petersburg, IL.
Thomas graduated from Springfield High School with the class of 1952. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. Thomas earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois in civil engineering in 1957, and later earned his degree in professional engineering (held in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Florida). He went on to work at Punzak, then Ralph Hahn & Associates, followed by Hanson Engineers, then Hammel, Green and Abrahamson (HGA), followed by HDR in Springfield; and lastly with Cappellin Consulting Service. Thomas had a great passion for his work. He was a member of Social Fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon at U of I, Island Bay Yacht Club (since 1958), where he was Commodore in 1980, he sailed Celebrities & E-Scows, and was a member of Sangamo Club (since 1960). Thomas was an active member of Ashrae, Smacna, Aspe, and Rotary Club. He was known as caring, well-liked, intelligent, and easy going.
He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Michael Punzak; and brothers, Charles and Stuart Cappellin.
Thomas is survived by his wife, Jana Cappellin of Springfield; sons, Jon (Lori) Cappellin of Petersburg and Tommy Cappellin of Chicago; grandchildren, Blake (Katie) Cappellin and Lauren Cappellin; great-grandchild, Milani Cappellin; several special nieces and nephews; and many close friends.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at Butler Funeral Home – Springfield, 900 S. Sixth St., Springfield.
Private family burial will be held.
