He was born June 6, 1954, in Springfield, the son of James D. and Dolores (Hartwig) Johnson.
Steve graduated from Lanphier High School in 1972. He worked at American Metals Supply for 32 years. Able to retire early, Steve and Linda pursued many activities together including, golfing, fishing, gardening, and canning their produce. Taking various classes at U of I Extension versed them in growing many things, recycling and composting and creating rain catching and watering systems. Trips to the Smoky Mountains, staying in Gatlinburg, exploring Memphis and Nashville were enjoyed often. He loved music, playing his guitars for hours and played with several local groups over the years. Steve was a kind, old soul, who never said a harsh word, and he will be remembered and missed.
He was preceded in death by his father and beloved grandparents, Alfred and Marie Hartwig.
Steve is survived by his mother, Mrs. Dolores Johnson; sister, Sandra Johnson; brother, Darryl Johnson; niece, Shauna Johnson; great-niece, Morgan Cardwell (Alex); and great-nephews, Levi Johnson (Brittany), Matthew Antonacci (Destiny), and Austin Kane (Mimi). Steve was blessed to have four great-great-nieces and five great-great-nephews and he loved his family.
After 27 wonderful years together, missing him beyond belief is his partner, Linda Stecker who also survives along with Linda's daughter, Larissa Lornitis Mitchell and her husband, Bill Mitchell; and special friends, Linda and Jim Park, Karen and Kisty Allen, Bonnie Sharp and Lisa Sharp Fox.
Cremation was provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center.
Per Steve’s wishes, no services will be held.
