He was born in Springfield, April 27,1945, the son of Russell L. and Ruth P. (Fry) Black. Russ was adopted by the Clay family. His parents, two brothers, and six sisters preceded him in death. He married Sherry Nation in Springfield, December 23, 1972 and she survives.
Russ is also survived by two daughters; Gina (Terry) Sims of New Berlin, IL, and Dawn (Kenny) Lilly, of Springfield, his son, Daniel Tannehill of Springfield, five grandchildren: Tasha Sims, Cheyenne Huff, Chase Clay, Caitlyn Behymer and Harley Nelson. There are fourteen great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He earned a Masters of Automotive Technology and was a certified ASE Technician. He loved all things mechanical. He began his career with Lockheed Martin. He then worked at Lincoln Land Boats, then joined Landmark Ford serving as an automotive technician, and then worked at Montgomery Elevator and at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and School from where he retired. After retirement, Russ went to work at U-Haul as a transfer driver.
He was a member of the Richland Creek Baptist Church for several years and previously a member of the Methodist Church serving as a lay speaker. He held a private pilot’s license and enjoyed flying. He was a member of the Flying 20’s Club. He also enjoyed RC model aircraft and was a member of the RC Flyers. Russ and Sherry rode many miles on their Harley Davidson Trike. Russ was a member of the Harley Owners Group. He was a licensed HAM radio operator KA9TSR. Above all, Russ enjoyed his family and the times of gathering with them.
Arrangements are in the care of Bisch Funeral Home West 2931 S. Koke Mill Rd. Springfield, IL where the family will greet friends and family on Friday, December 1, 2023 from 9:30 am until the time of a funeral service at 11:00 am. Pastor Keith Masten will officiate. Burial will follow in Old Salem Cemetery, west of Springfield.
