Roger was born June 5, 1949, in Macomb, IL, the son of Russell and Lillian “Marie” Melvin Lawson. He married Linda L. Gifford on October 20, 1989, in Las Vegas, NV.
Roger graduated from Carthage High School and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He earned his bachelor’s from Western Illinois University in Industrial Education and Technology and then continued with his master’s degree in Public Administration. Roger was employed with the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison, IA from 1984 to 2008, retiring as Associate Warden of Treatment. Prior to that, he taught school and was self-employed in construction. Roger was a member of the Denver Christian Church in Denver, IL and was also a Mason. He was an avid golfer and reader, loved sports, and was known for his sense of humor. Roger was also an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.
He was preceded in death by his parents and great-niece, Jaide Lawson.
Roger is survived by his wife, Linda Lawson of Springfield; daughter, Elizabeth (Tony) Slater of Hannibal, MO; stepchildren, Bill (Sharon) Lyon of Clarendon Hills, IL and Natalie (Tim) Van Kanegan of Bloomington, IL; grandchildren, Thomas Slater, Anna (Rami) Wehbe, Gavin Van Kanegan, and Katelyn Lyon; siblings, Jim (Gina) Lawson and Joyce Lawson; and many nieces and nephews.
Cremation was provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies.
Memorial Gathering and Ceremony: Family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the ceremony at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at Butler Funeral Home-Springfield, 900 South 6th St., Springfield, IL with Pastor Joe Little officiating.
