Richard was born on October 6, 1951, in New York, NY, the son of Robert Eugene and Joan Elizabeth (Pratt) McChesney. He was born three months premature and placed in an incubator with 100% Oxygen, which resulted in his being completely blind all his life, but that didn’t stop him.
Richard attended Granada Hills High School in Granada Hills, CA and graduated as valedictorian. He attended the University of California, Irvine, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a double major in English Literature and Spanish. He then attended the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University in Provo, UT, graduating in May 1976 with the charter class.
Following law school, he married Marsha Jean Hillier, who died two years later. He married Kay Young on September 5, 1981, in Los Angeles, CA.
Richard worked as an Estate Tax Attorney for the Federal Government for 44 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife.
Richard is survived by his wife of 40 years, Kay Young MChesney of Springfield; and five adopted children: Michael Young McChesney of Springfield, Laura Ann McChesney of Springfield, Leul Tsegay (Hana Bekele) McChesney of St. Louis, MO, Mickey Mikias Elias Siraj (Hirut Berehe) McChesney of Puyallup, WA, and Seble Belay McChesney of Amarillo, TX; grandchildren, Eldana and Natnael Berehe McChesney; brother, Brian (Peggy) McChesney of Palm Valley, CA; sister, Mary McChesney Castrillo of Springville, UT; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Celebration of Life Service was held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on June 24, 2022.
Burial will take place at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
