He was born to George A. and Laura Mae (Refine) Schroeder in Nov 1932 in Springfield, IL.
Jim is survived by 4 children: Gloria (Joe) Phillips of VA, Sandy (Bobby) Palmer, Brian (Theresa) Schroeder and Jeff (Donna) Schroeder of IL; a brother Joe Schroeder of IL; a sister Sarah Ruggles of OK; 9 grandchildren and 20 great grands; as well as a loving companion Gertrude Johnson.
He is preceded in death by a son, Michael, his ex-wife Patricia, his parents, 2 sisters and 4 brothers.
Jim loved to travel! He enlisted in the Navy at age 17, stationed aboard the USS Salamonie AO-26, and visited 26 countries before switching to serve in the Illinois Air National Guard for 32 years. He was proud of his service to our country and helped veterans in many ways through his work in the the DAV, VFW, the Navy Club and the Sea Bees, and for a period of time acting as Commander in the DAV.
Jim was a member of Ironworkers Local 46 for most of his life, working alongside many family members and friends.
He loved spending time with his family, traveling, dancing, building, painting and making people laugh with his quick wit and practical jokes.
Cremation Rites will be accorded by the Bisch and Son Crematory.
Family and Friends are invited to a graveside service Friday, September 17, 2021 at 1:00 pm at Camp Butler National Cemetery. The United States Air Force and the Inter-Veteran Burial Detail of Sangamon County will conduct military honors.
