She was born in Kewanee, IL, April 15, 1935 the daughter of Clifford and Lillian (Rieke) Carter. After graduation from High School, Iona began to study music. She came to Springfield with her sister and her soon to be husband. That was where she met her future brother-in-law’s brother, W. Henry Humphrey. It was love at first sight and after a brief courtship, they married on January 4, 1955 in Corinth MS.
Iona worked alongside her husband Henry in the family business, Humphrey’s Market. She continued to own and operate the business after Henry passed away in 2014. Her family will continue the legacy that Henry and Iona set as an example to them.
Iona had perfect pitch. She was an accomplished musician and would often share her talent with family and friends. Raised on a farm, she loved the outdoors. She enjoyed watching animals of all kinds but especially intrigued with birds. A “shutter bug”, Iona loved to take pictures. A natural artist, Iona spent many hours “hand drawing” the signage for the store and advertisements of special items. She was always prepared, carrying a “self-created repair” kit with her everywhere she went. She was noted for her abilities to repair just about anything. In her spare time, Iona enjoyed both flower and vegetable gardening. She had a green thumb for sure. Her produce and various floral displays were enjoyed by all who saw them. Most important to Iona was her devotion to her husband and family. She found joy in creating a home full of love, laughter and instilled determination and a strong, honest work ethic in not only her family but those who worked at the market. She will be missed by all her knew her.
In addition to her beloved husband Henry, Iona was also preceded in death by her son, William Everett Humphrey in 1982 and her sister, Marguerite Carter Humphrey in 1978.
Surviving are her two daughters, Iona L. (Jack) Humphrey-Ray, Hope (Greg) Humphrey Walker, both of Springfield, her son, E. Henry Humphrey of Ste. Genevieve, MO, her granddaughter, Jessica Ray of Springfield, two sisters; Joyce Pinks of Geneseo, IL and Ruth Ann Durbin of Kewanee, IL. There are several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
