He was born on November 3, 1932 in Springfield, the son of the late Frank and Amelia (Schmidt) Dunkus, Sr. He married Nancy E. Hawkins on March 17, 1973 at Third Presbyterian Church in Springfield and she survives.
He was a lifelong resident of Springfield. As a kid, he played baseball, was a marbles champion and carried papers. After graduating from Lanphier High School in 1950, Frank started working at Sangamo Electric and worked there until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1952, he became Supply Sergeant in January 1953, during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge in 1954, he returned to work at Sangamo Electric as a tool and die maker and then went into computer programming of machines. In 1975, he started working at Fiat Allis as a Manufacturing Engineer until it closed. In May of 1985, Frank decided to go back to school and went on to earn his Associates of Applied Science in Accounting degree at LLCC. He graduated with high honors in May of 1987. Frank then went to work as an Account Technician with the State of IL until his retirement in 1997.
Besides his wife Nancy, Frank is survived by 2 daughters, Melinda “Mindy” (James) Glenn, Jr. of Sherman, IL and Michelle “Shelly” Walker of LaSalle, IL; a grandson Christopher (April) Hood of Belleville, IL; a granddaughter Brittany Glenn of Chatham, IL; 4 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; and his cat “Oreo”.
Besides his parents, Frank was preceded in death by a son Michael A. Dunkus.
He enjoyed traveling, playing poker, cars (corvettes) and family gatherings.
Services are under the direction of Bisch Funeral Home West, 2931 S. Koke Mll Rd., Springfield, where visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 24, 2022 from 9 am until time of the funeral service at 11 am. Chaplain Jeff Harter with Concordia Village will officiate the service. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, with military honors provided by the U.S. Army and the Interveteran’s Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
