He was born on January 8, 1956 in Moline, IL, the son of Troy and Ann (Salman) Stilwell. David married Edith Myers on February 14, 1974 in Silvis, IL.
David proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy and Army during the Vietnam era. He went on to work as a support service worker for the State of IL. David was a member of the South Jacksonville Fire Department and the YMCA of Jacksonville. He also volunteered with Toys for Tots and at Camp Butler National Cemetery through the Veterans Affairs.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
David is survived by his wife, Edith Stilwell of Springfield; daughters, Kelly Stilwell-Carter of Jacksonville, IL and Kimberly (Henry) Dambacher of Virden, IL; grandchildren, Byron, Emily and Thomas Dambacher, and James (Rachel) Carter; great-grandchildren, Lillian Dambacher-Ruiz (daughter of Byron and Iliana Dambacher-Ruiz) of Springfield and Everett Carter of St. Charles, MO; and siblings, Allen (Gwenn) Stilwell of Mississippi and Valene (David) Nusbaum of Waterloo, IA.
Cremation was provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center.
Graveside ceremony will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 6, 2023, at Camp Butler National Cemetery with Pastor Scott Nichols officiating. Family and friends may gather at Butler Funeral Home – Springfield, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield at 1:30 p.m. to process. Military honors will be provided by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and Department of Defense.
