Betty was born on July 31, 1933, in a log cabin, in Christian County. She was the daughter of Roscoe Clayton and Daisy Grace (Walker) Seitz. She married the love of her life and high school sweetheart, James Wabel, on July 5, 1952, in Decatur, Illinois. Betty graduated from Stephen Decatur High School in 1951. She retired from Ameritech and Illinois Bell Telephone Company after 20 years of service.
She was a life-long member of Laurel United Methodist Church where she was a member of the choir and Stephen Ministry for many years. She belonged to the Springfield Garden Club, Past President of the Cachet Club, and a life member of the Springfield Ceramics and Craft Club. Betty was a volunteer at Lincoln Land ALL, Pioneers of America, UIS auditorium volunteer for 18 years, and a guide at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum and Library. Betty was the founder of a Red Hat group the Queen of Purple Bouquets.
Betty was a good wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a world-wide traveler, loved to play cards, and enjoyed singing. She enjoyed spending time with her family, and many friends. We wish to thank Concordia Village, especially the Assisted Living/Memory Care family for their continued support and kindness shown to Betty. Thank you also to the hospice team at Hands of God Hospice.
She is survived by her two daughters, Marcia (Dennis) McCormick of Springfield, and Rita (Kevin) Fuchs of New Berlin; grandchildren, Kasey McCormick of New York, NY, Colin (Erinn) McCormick of Easley, SC, Christopher (Corinne) Fuchs and Claire (Joshua) Koons, both of Chatham, Jacob (Molly) Fuchs of New Berlin, and Joshua (Calyssa) Fuchs of Springfield; three great-grandchildren, Renley Fuchs, Makenna Fuchs, and Griffin McCormick; sister-in-law, Nancy Seitz of Moweaqua; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She is was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; brother, Dallas Seitz of Moweaqua; and one great-grandchild, Campbell Koons.
Visitation and Funeral Ceremony: Family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, December 26, 2024, at Laurel United Methodist Church, 631 S. Grand Ave. West, Springfield, followed by a Funeral Ceremony at 12:30 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Kent Lolling officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
The family will host a Memorial Gathering from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. on Friday, December 27, 2024, at Concordia Village, 4101 W. Iles Ave., Springfield, followed by a Memorial Service at 3:00 p.m. with Chaplain Jeff Harter officiating.
