Doreen Froehlich, age 85, of Springboro, OH passed away in her sleep on Friday, October 22, 2021 at Miami Valley Hospital. She was born on October 5, 1936 in Kingston, Jamaica to parents William and Ada Chen (nee Lue). She was the first in her family to graduate from high school after earning a scholarship to attend Kingston’s prestigious all-girls’ high school named Alpha Academy. Doreen was then awarded a scholarship to attend Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree. She subsequently earned her Master’s degree at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio.
Doreen had a long career as a beloved high school history teacher. For her first job, she returned to Jamaica to teach at Alpha Academy. After a few years, she immigrated to the United States, where she taught U.S. history, including the history of non-white people in the United States, in a GED program through the racial and social justice organization known as OIC (Opportunities Industrialization Center). Doreen then met and married her husband Lawrence Froehlich, Jr. and moved to Meadville, PA, where she later taught at Meadville Area Senior High School until her retirement in 2005.
Doreen had the highest of standards in everything she did. She was a selfless, loving, and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Doreen was a tireless educator who spent long hours every evening and early morning working on her lesson plans and grading papers. She was an outstanding chef who cooked elaborate meals from inspiration rather than recipes, treating her family to a banquet for each gathering. Doreen was a fantastic gardener and cultivator of house plants. She also had the amazing ability to recite from memory Shakesperian sonnets and works by the Romantic poets Wordworth, Byron, and Keats. Every day of her life before her hospitalization in October 2021, Doreen did the crossword puzzle and logged 10,000 steps per day between walking and riding her exercise bike while listening to the news.
Doreen was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lawrence Joseph Froehlich, Jr.; brothers Conrad, Gilbert, and Egbert; sisters Esme, Esther, and Iris; and sisters-in-law Gretchen and Anne.
Doreen is survived by her son Joe Froehlich; her daughter Tanya Froehlich; daughter-in-law Stacey Froehlich; son-in-law Junichi Tamai; grandchildren Julia Tamai and Sarah, Joseph, Olivia, and Evelyn Froehlich; sisters-in-law Christine, Bec, Jeanne, and Lisa; and brothers-in-law David and Jim.
