Steinman Family: I did not know that Jerry had passed away.  I remember the first time meeting him in 1973. I was new in the business after my dad's passing in 1972. I meet Jerry at a meeting as I was a little unsure about me taking over our family's beer business. He made me feel very much at ease and more confident that I would succeed in the business. We had a great conversation. What a gentlemen kind and knowledgeable man.  I will never forget him. Our deepest condolences to you Benj and the Steinman families.

Jerry and Irene Steinman both cared deeply for their family and their adopted industry, which became their family as well.  My late father started as a beer lobbyist in TX and I can fondly remember a family tradition was opening a holiday card from the Steinman family each December as the first thing we did, each holiday season.  We all shared a faith in a family first mentality, and a successfully regulated malt beverage industry!

You can't think about analyzing and reporting related to the beer/beverage industry, without the name Steinman being attached.  Jerry pioneered an industry and left a legacy that is now successfully, and proudly, continuing into the 3rd generation....talk about the ultimate gift of Pass-It-On for all that loved and remember Jerry.

Jerry Steinman was the founder and longtime publisher of Beer Marketers INSIGHTS (BMI), a trend-setting beer industry publication that has influenced the beer and beverage industry for decades. BMI broke new ground as a newsletter that demanded facts from beer industry members and turned that information into data and analysis. The BMI model has become the gold standard for the industry, the media and the public.

In addition to providing immeasurable value to the beer and beverage distribution industry, Jerry was one of those rare individuals who cared deeply about others. Every single conversation I had with him over the years included him asking about me and my family. He was quick-witted, thoughtful and kind.

It was no surprise that as Jerry was transforming the beer industry, he was also building a successful family business. Jerry’s son Benj, daughter-in-law Robin, and grandsons David and Jason, work together daily to keep the BMI legacy going strong.

I recall visiting with Jerry at one of my first state association meetings many years ago, the Mississippi Beer Distributors Association in Destin, FL. He shared with me some simple advice. He said that beer wholesalers only care about two things: their business and their family. His advice to me was “if you figure that out, you’re going be ok.” He was right.

My heart is broken! Jerry was a wonderful human being who cared deeply for his wife, children, family and friends. His journalistic integrity was beyond reproach and on those occasions where it was tested he had the courage to do the right thing. The malt beverage industry in general, and beer wholesalers in particular, owe Jerry a deep debt of gratitude. In an era when publishers and other media outlets confuse “ freedom of the press” with “public relations”,  Jerry and  his “vision”, Beer Marketer’s Insights, never lost sight of it’s responsibility to report accurately and fairly to it subscribers and readers. Well done Jerry! I promised you I would attend your 100th birthday party and, please know,  it will be an honor to toast a malt beverage to a man whose love, positive attitude and inner beauty will long survive as his legacy. My prayers for you and your wonderful family .💕🙏

Jerry was a regular attendee at the annual Coors Distributor conventions by the time I began working on Coors at their ad agency, Foote, Cone & Belding. He knew absolutely everyone, would always have a kind word, and I can never remember seeing him without a smile on his face.

Jerry was a very dear friend of my Dad (also named Jerry), drawn together by their shared focus on the eponymously named "beer business." After my Dad's passing in 2007, Jerry and I kept in touch, with Jerry intermittently sending me a newsletter culled from news accounts he'd encounter during the course of his voracious reading. Jerry, a passionate journo like myself, couldn't steer clear of the news. He was never far from my thoughts as he, my Dad and I all shared the given name Jerry (though I spell my name Gerry).  Jerry was perhaps the last of my Dad's peers -- World War 2 vets who climbed to success in the tradition-bound but increasingly sophisticated brewing industry. As an aside, knowing of my passion for both history and Ireland, Jerry mentioned to me in 1984 or so that he was among the thousands of U.S. soldiers stationed in Northern Ireland during World War 2, then a jumping-off spot for Allied troops preparing for the impending  Normandy invasion. I had never known of the presence of American forces  in Ireland during the war. Somewhere in my files I have a fuller account of his  experiences there, and when I locate it I will share  it with Benj and Glen. In this picture, which dates from 1980 or thereabouts, Jerry is second from the left, with my Dad (Jerry Regan, president of Martlet Importing Co.) to Jerry's left. To my Dad's left is Earl Barberi and to Earl's left is Bob Ringer, both on my Dad's team. The fellow on the far left, I believe, was one of my  Dad's field reps, whose name eludes me now. With Jerry's passing I feel I'm witnessing the end of another personal landmark, and a sad one at that. But still, Jerry's a stellar example of how to age -- and live -- with exemplary dignity. L'chaim!
