Married to Guiseppe, Joseph “Joe” Piazza on July 1, 1947 in Our Lady of the Presentation Roman Catholic Church in Brooklyn, New York. Mary and Joe were married for 57 years. Guisppe died on March 9, 2004.
Maria is pre-deceased by her sister Priama Cumella, of NJ and her 3 brothers Antioco (Gino) Manca, Ottavio Manca and Giovanni Manca, all from Italy.
Maria is survived by her two daughters, Lucy Levin (Paul) and Amelia Katz (Stephen) both of Spring Hill, Florida; two grandchildren David Joseph Levin (Adriana) of NY and Lisa Anne Twiss (Timothy) of Baltimore, Maryland; 4 great grandchildren Siena and Leo Twiss of Baltimore, Maryland, Victor and Julia Levin, Ana Mell (Granddaughter of Adriana) of NY. Maria is also survived by her four sisters, Mafalda Tufano of NJ, Pinuccia Daino of Genova, Italy, Quintina Tedesco and Elvira Birritteri of Agrigento, Sicily, Italy. Maria is also survived by many nieces in Italy and the United States.
Maria lived in Agrigento, Sicily, Italy until June 11, 1947, when she set sail from Palermo, Sicily on the ship “Marine Shark” and arrived in the New York Harbor on June 25, 1947 at the age of 20. Maria and Joseph lived in Brooklyn, New York. Maria was very proud and happy on the day she became a Naturalized Citizen of America on December 5, 1950. Maria and Joseph then moved years later to East Northport, Long Island, NY. They moved to Port Richey, Florida in 1973 and then a few years later they settled in Spring Hill, Florida.
Maria was very active in her church, St. Joan of Arc RC Church in Spring Hill. She lived across the street from the church and attended Mass every morning. Maria was a member of the Council of Catholic Women and The Merry Widows Group. Maria volunteered for many years at the St. Vincent De Paul store in Spring Hill. Maria also volunteered her time administering Holy Communion to the homebound. In March 2013 Maria received the HALO AWARD from St. Joan of Arc in appreciation of her dedication to the Church, Clergy and Parishioners. Maria was a loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother who always loved and trusted in God. We must say goodbye with an ache in our hearts, but we know Mom is at peace now with God. We love you Mom and thank you for always being there for us.
Visitation will be from 4-6PM Wednesday, September 16, 2020 at Turner Funeral Home in Spring Hill, Florida. Funeral mass will be 10AM Thursday, September 17th at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Spring Hill. Private entombment will follow to Grace Memorial Gardens in Hudson, Florida.
