Beloved Michael made his transition at his home in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho on Thursday, March 28, 2024.
He accomplished his life purpose of being a “voice for the voiceless” and bringing faith communities together in a place of mutual respect and cooperation. His was a life of utmost excellence, passion, integrity, and extreme kindness. His charismatic personality, distinctive voice and loving, open heart were gifts he was given in this lifetime. He left being fully used as an instrument of a Holy Presence on earth.
Michael was born in McKinney, Texas to Jack and Janice Moran. He had a loving childhood with his forever companion and beloved sister, Patti Moran Cook and extended family. They were raised at the VA hospital In McKinney until their dad was transferred to the VA hospital in Spokane as hospital administrator.
Michael attended St. Charles Catholic School and then went on to graduate from Shadle Park High School. He then attended Central Washington University where he met Nancy Powell. They married and later celebrated the birth of their treasured daughter, Jennifer.
He joined the Army Reserves and served for 10 years as a reservist. In the 1970’s Michael used his talent as a broadcaster in Seattle at KIRO and KUUU, playing Oldies but Goodies, rock and roll, news and talk radio. Later he was a broadcaster at KHQ in Spokane, Washington, where he considered home.
Michael and his second wife Faith Clark Moran became Unity Ministers in the mid 80’s after attending ministerial school at the Unity Institute in Kansas City, Missouri. Their ministries included Tacoma, WA, Sacramento Christ Unity, retreat directors at Unity Village, Co-ministers at Living Enrichment Center in Wilsonville, Oregon, and in 1998 pioneered their long-term Interfaith Unity ministry, Spiritual Life Center in Sacramento California.
After the death of his beautiful wife, Faith in 2008, and his retirement in 2014, Michael moved to Coeur d’Alene Idaho to be near his family and loved ones. He adored his children and grandchildren who were the highlight of his life. The family gatherings and memories of laughter and love will live forever as part of his lasting legacy.
Michael was an Irishman through and through, a storyteller like no other. His jokes and stories and big personality will live on in all who knew him. He leaves behind his beloved sister, Patti Moran Cook (Ron) and cherished daughter Jennifer Moran Miller (Andrew). Sons, Darin Nelson (Lola), Talor Moran (Melisse), grandchildren, Mitchell Rasmussen (Tori), Austin Rasmussen (Chelsea), Sophia and Liam Moran, Nikki and Isabella Nelson. Nieces Melanie Moran (Vic) and Erin Riley O’Riordain (Terry), his love, Gaea Swinford, extended family, and friends around the world.
As a child, Michael appreciated the sacred and built his life around growing and sharing his spirituality. He often said that “cooperation is the highest form of spirituality” and always encouraged others to live fully. He lived his highest values exemplifying kindness, and genuine caring.
He was honored with several awards including the esteemed Morehead College Gandhi, King, Ikeda Award for Global Leadership Toward Reconciling Differences, the Charles Fillmore Award from Unity Worldwide Ministries, and the Building Unity award from the Salam Islamic Center in Sacramento.
A Celebration of Life service to be held Saturday, May 4, 2024 2:00pm at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Sacramento, CA.
