KLIMOWSKI, Jacqueline Grace (nee SEWELL) 65 of Spokane, Loving Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Wife, Sister in Christ and San Francisco Giants fan passed away peacefully in the early morning hours on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at Hospice of Spokane. Jackie was born April 16, 1953, in Berkeley, CA, to George Sewell and Betty Lazaga Sewell, the second of three children. Jackie grew up in Saratoga, CA (graduating from Westmont High School). She married Darryl “Dewey” Smestad in 1974 and lived in Campbell, CA where she began her 30+ year career with the United States Postal Service. Jackie and Dewey then moved their family to Spokane, WA in 1982. While working with the USPS’ Maintenance Distribution Department, Jackie met Michael Klimowski, whom she married in 1992. Jackie had a passion for family and valued close friendships. After losing her mother, Betty, in December of 1964, she maintained close, lifelong relationships with her aunts and uncles (including a special bond with her Aunt Lea & Uncle Tom Nichols and Uncle Leon & Auntie Marge Lazaga), as well as all of her cousins. She and her cousins would find time to be together by holding their yearly “Lazaga-palooza.” Jackie was known for her passionate and unconditional love of family. Jackie brought that same love, loyalty and dedication to her close friendships. Jackie was uniquely accepting of others. She was a dedicated member of the True Hope Church Prayer Team, praying weekly for the needs of others. Jackie loved the Lord and enjoyed Bible Study Fellowship as well as spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ via tracts that she shared with people she met, going back to the late 60’s on the streets of San Francisco with her friend Debbie! Jackie loved sparkle sequins on her shoes, Motown music, singing traditional Christian Hymns, and the ocean, especially Santa Cruz, CA. She treasured her summers on Diamond Lake at the family cabin outside Newport, WA, where her father was born and raised. Jackie is survived by her loving husband of 26 years, Mike; her brothers, Phillip Sewell (Maria) of Goleta, CA and Tom Sewell (Charmen) of Mill Creek, WA; her children, Rachel Baumann (Curtis) and Aaron Smestad, step-daughter Michelle Kaufman, along with her honorary children Mindi Clark and Bob Merrick; 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, her mother, and her first husband, Dewey. We want to say a special thank you to the staff at the Hospice House and to her close friends, Debbie, Lori, and Ruth for all the support you’ve provided our mother and our family. A memorial service will be held December 8, 2018 at 11:30 AM at True Hope Church, 1316 N. Lincoln St, Spokane, WA 99201. A second memorial will be held in the bay area on January 26, 2019. Interment will be at the Newport Cemetery at another date.
