Irene went to be with the Lord May 8, 2016 at the age of 105. Irene lived in Spokane her entire adult life. Irene was born in Havre, MT on February 18, 1911. At age eight her family moved to Satsuma, AL where she attended public school. In 1929 she moved to Spokane, WA where she attended Deaconess School of Nursing, graduating with a Nursing Degree in 1932. She was considered one of the pioneers in the nursing field.
Irene’s first job as a nurse was working at Deaconess Hospital as well as private duty nursing. Raising a family of five children was her most rewarding life experience. While raising her children she also cared for both sets of parents. She worked at Rockwood Clinic, retiring after fourteen years of service. She always cared for others. For many years she helped package supplies for shipment to overseas medical missionaries. She also enjoyed assisting Hmong refugees from Southeast Asia with their medical needs.
In 1994 her husband, Philip Malcom Reid, preceded her in death. They were happily married for 55 years. Irene is survived by four of her five children: Mary Lou Reid of Spokane, WA; Raymond (Karen) Reid of Camano Island, WA; Jim (Jean) Reid of Spokane WA; and Marcia (Larry) Anderson of Folsom, CA. Her eldest daughter, Ruth Ann (Bob) Dyk, preceded her in death in 2014. Irene has eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. When asked what her secret was for such a long life she replied, “My strong faith in God, always putting Jesus first.” A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Riverview Care Center at 2pm on Saturday, June 4th.
