Florence was born on Jan. 7, 1934, in Middletown New York. She passed away Wed night, Sept 14, 2011 with her daughter at her side. Florence received her undergraduate degree from the College of New Rochelle in New York. She then attended Florida State University where she received her MSW, and met and married her husband James Hansen. They settled in Jame’s home state of Washington. She served people throughout her entire lifetime, starting as a caseworker for public welfare, followed by Catholic Services in Spokane, and the Cuban children’s program in Colfax. She then became the Social Service administrator for the artificial kidney center at Sacred Heart Hospital. She spent the majority of her working career as the Administrator of the Kidney Center. She was awarded both the State and National Social Worker of the Year. At 55 she took an early retirement and spent the next 20 years training Community Health Care Workers in Zambia. She enjoyed world travel and visited over 100 countries. She was an inspiration to many and taught all the true meaning of service. She is survived by her daughter Florence Schandl, grandchildren Ryan and Maria Schandl, and her brother Joseph Congiolosi. A vigil will be held at 6:00pm Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011 at Ball and Dodd funeral Home, 5100 W Wellesley Ave. A funeral mass will be at 10:00 am on Monday, Sept. 19, 2011 followed by a reception at the church and burial service at 1:00 pm at Fairmount Memorial Park.
