After a winning day of bridge with girlfriends (her favorite pastime), May 10, 2018, our beloved Mother passed away peacefully at home while resting and reading her prayer books. She was 89 years young, living life to the fullest up to her last day.
Born August 21, 1928, to Frank and Anna Robinson in Ford, Kentucky, the middle of six children during the Depression years, Doris Louise, was taught to work, “to give a day’s work for a day’s pay”; and work she did throughout her lifetime. She delivered papers as a young girl, took care of her three younger brothers, and baby sat after school, on weekends, and during summer months. In high school she held a full time job after school waiting tables at an ice cream parlor and after graduation took a job as a grocery checker, then a graph-a-type and address graph operator at Wright Patterson AFB. There she met her first husband, James P. Walters, and father of her two children, Vicki and Jim. She traveled the country with him and began raising her children, settling in Spokane near Fairchild AFB. It was in Spokane she met her second husband, Arden Howey, who helped continue to raise her young children as she went back to work as an office manager and bookkeeper at Gonzaga University from where she retired. Through her work at GU, she became an enthusiastic Zag fan and loved watching every game possible of men’s and women’s basketball during the seasons.
After retirement Doris and Arden became active in Marine Corps reunions, traveling extensively, visiting all US states except Vermont and many places overseas as well. They were avid bowlers and in many leagues where Doris won countless trophies over those years for her bowling skills. Also avid card players, Doris continued to play in three Bridge groups after Arden passed away.
As a member of Fowler Methodist Church since 1961, Doris enjoyed her volunteer work there as well as faithfully attending Sunday services. She was grateful every day for her “Fowler Family” who loved and supported her and her family for 57 years and counting.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Arden; as well as sister Anna Winburn, and brothers James, Bobby & Glen Robinson, all of Ohio. She is survived by her brother Roy Robinson (Greta) of Ohio; her daughter, Vicki Myers; her son James (Jim) Walters (Lindi); grandchildren Kerry Schultz, Jamie Albonico (Angelo), Emily Hansen (Kevin); great grandchildren Malorie, Heaven, Kerry, Aurelio, and Zachary; and many nieces and nephews.
Our family sincerely wishes to thank the exceptional nurses, doctors, and staff at Hospice of Spokane, for the care she received during these last few months. Mom was especially thankful for your grace.
Services will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Hazen & Jaeger Funeral Home, 1306 N Monroe, Spokane, WA with visitation at 1:00 pm and a funeral service at 2:00 pm. A reception for fellowship and refreshments will follow, and interment at the Fairmount Memorial Park will be held after the reception at 4:30 pm for anyone who wishes to accompany the family.
