MaryAnne was born the ninth child of James and Kathleen Edgar (Kerr) on January 28, 1975, in Toms River, New Jersey. At six months old, she and her family moved to Butte, Montana where she attended Butte schools. MaryAnne graduated from Butte Central High School in 1993. After giving birth to her first son and graduating high school, she attended Montana Tech of the University of Montana in Butte.
On January 9, 1999, she met Al Hockaday at her company Christmas party and again later at Montana Tech. The couple began their lifetime relationship shortly after and took their first class together. They took a class each semester together from one another’s degree curriculum. During her college career MaryAnne was part of an absolutely amazing team at the college radio station, KMSM. MaryAnne and the crew created school events such as music benefits, festivals, back-to school music events, and radio station operations. All while working besides Al. Her biggest responsibility at the station was cataloging the entire music inventory at the station. Her graphic art skills would later take her to her first position out of college at the Montana Standard as a graphic artist for their advertising department.
In 2002 she received her Bachelor of Science in Professional Technical Communications. During her college career she gave birth to two sons, Nicholas Reed and Blaine Mitchell Hockaday. While studying, she maintained two part-time jobs as well. MaryAnne and Al also made time for their children’s sports, family vacation, travelling around the country. They enjoyed fishing with their children on the Montana rivers in all cardinal directions of their hometown.
In late 2003 MaryAnne and Al departed Butte to begin their new adventures, beginning in Edmonds, WA where Al started his first projects in the construction industry. Philip Albert, their youngest son was born in Edmonds in November 2004. The family lived in Washington, Nevada, New Jersey, Arizona, and finally back to Washington for the fourth time in late 2018. The family was in the process of relocating to Texas from late 2021 into Spring of 2022.
During her career after college, she stated as a graphic artist at the Montana Standard in 2002. When the family relocated to Washington state for the first time, she assisted in managing and teaching at a state approved daycare in Edmonds, WA. In Spring Creek, NV she served as a substitute teacher at elementary, middle, and high schools. Additionally, while in Nevada she worked in the Barrick Gold office in Elko. Upon return to Washington state, she found a position in Portland, OR, as an intake/insurance technician at a children’s center. When the family moved to Puyallup in 2008, MaryAnne made the decision to focus on her health and spend more time with her three sons where she enjoyed being a Cub Scouting Mom for several years in Washington, New Jersey, and Arizona. When the family returned to the Puget Sound area for the third time, she bought the first home with Al and the children. This was time to really work on her health. Her pets helped her conquer her health issues. Daily walks and research into her nutritional knowledge got her out of using a cane and using a wheelchair for events that required a lot of walking.
In late 2019, MaryAnne and Al joined the campaign team for Loren Culp. They started as coordinators for Grant County Washington. They quickly advanced as field directors for five counties in central/eastern Washington and finally to advance team directors. MaryAnne absolutely loved her experience on the campaign. It was one of her finest accomplishments. They continued to work on strategy teams until November of 2021.
Throughout her travels with her family, she supported and worked with Al on all their music projects creating most of the graphics, managing stages/venues, and just being there to watch a show. She enjoyed all things with her children, concerts, professional and amateur sports events. Hockey was her favorite having followed teams in four different regions and leagues. In the 2021-2022 hockey season, she watched hockey in two different leagues in Washington and Texas. In 2019, MaryAnne and Al attended 26 concert to celebrate 20 years as a couple, with 19 years married. They often went to these with very close friends and family.
Over the past three years, she also loved spending family time and adventuring with Al, her wonderful children Corey, Philip, Savannah, and granddaughter Aubri. The family went on trips around the northwest for concerts, camping, fireworks, eastern Washington outdoors, Wenatchee hockey/arena football games, music projects, home improvements, and creating a multitutde projects with her Cricut. At the time of her passing she was working very hard on certifications for tax preparation, both personal and business, and several other accounting and business management certifications. The best family activities MaryAnne, Al and the children did was family cooking on an almost daily basis. Everyone has their own areas of creative cuisine. MaryAnne standouts were her Corned Beef and Cabbage, pot pies, delicious one of a kind meatloaf, steaks, chocolate chip banana bread, Carmel Apple and Pumpkin Pies. She also was quite the Mixologist and loved her wine.
She loved her multi-media life. She loved being a mother, a wife, a grandmother. As a grandmother she was named Nini by Aubri. She showed her family a new adventure at every opportunity. Whether it was reading, driving, fishing, shooting, traveling, camping, researching reel-time life, she was all in. She became a mechanic, painter, gardener, chef, teacher, bus driver, tax preparer, accountant, and a lot more. Last year she worked with her family to support a dear friend who nearly lost his life in an auto accident. She drove him home from rehabilitation. It was true testament to the beautiful she was. To her entire family whom she loved dearly she always gave her all.
MaryAnne is survived by her ever-loving husband Al, with their wonderful children Corey, Philip, Savannah, and her beautiful granddaughter Aubri. She is also survived by her brothers Raymond (Vicki), Tom (Susie),Patrick, John (Mary), Kevin, and sisters Eileen (Bruce), Jane (Nathan), and Kathleen (Clifton). MaryAnne is also survived by many wonderful nieces, nephews, great nieces and grand nephews. She is also survived by her brothers-in-law Mark and Scott Hockaday.
