Kelly was born November 5th, 1957 in Colfax, Washington to Maxine and Clarence Johnson. He grew up in small town Oakesdale, where he enjoyed fishing with his father and brothers in the small lakes around Whitman County and steelhead fishing on the Snake River. He also enjoyed playing sports, especially baseball and basketball. He played at all levels on through high school, and had success making it to the basketball State B tournament every year. He graduated from Oakesdale High School and attended Washington State University where he earned a Bachelor's of Arts in Economics. He was apart of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, and his fraternity brothers have always expressed their love for his sense of humor.
He then moved to Spokane, WA and over the years he held a position at Plum Creek Lumber Mill and eventually took a position in maintenance at Sacred Heart Medical Center. He also enjoyed doing many odd jobs and small projects for family and friends.
One of Kelly’s greatest pastimes, that brought him an abundance of joy and pleasure, was camping and fly fishing the St. Joe River in Avery, Idaho. Anytime he could, he would head that way and over the years he was able to take many summer trips up there with his 3 children. Many fond memories were created as he taught his children how to fly fish, watched them swim in the river, and enjoyed a fresh roasted hotdog around the campfire.
Kelly’s passion for sports continued into his adult life and was passed to his kids as they grew up. He loved playing catch with the baseball or football in the backyard, a nice round of golf with his boys, and cheering on his daughter on the basketball court. His encouragement and competitive nature is something instilled in each of his kids. He would also never miss an opportunity to cheer on the Washington State Cougars, Seattle Mariners, and Seattle Seahawks. He will be remembered for his friendly and relaxed personality, his ability to crack a joke at any moment, and his ease in making new friends everywhere he went.
Kelly is survived by his 3 children: Travis (Sarah) Johnson, Matthew Johnson, and Brittney (David) Petersen; his mother, Maxine Johnson; his brother Randy (Kathy) Johnson; his brother Dave (Sue) Johnson; and a large extended family. He also had many friends who we know will miss him very much. He is preceded in death by his father Clarence.
A Celebration of Life will held at a later date in the Spring of 2023. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Kelly’s life.
