Following a short period of illness, John died on August 17th, 2022, surrounded by family. John was born March 30th, 1946, and was adopted shortly after birth by John E. and Leonardine Cannon of Bellevue, WA.
During high school John visited a veterinarian when his dog was injured, and his passion in life was sparked. John started his professional education at Seattle University. Later he transferred to Washington State University where he first obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Economics. John then obtained his degree as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and, finally, a Master’s degree in Microbiology.
John met the love of his life, Sharon E Job, in veterinary school and was married in 1972. Following his residency in Bakersfield, CA, he moved to Spokane and established Argonne Village Veterinary Clinic and started his family with his wife. John and Sharon were happily married for 49 years. Together with Dr. Sharon, Dr. John worked with thousands of animals over the 35 years of his professional life, and he was an accomplished surgeon.
In addition to being a loving son, husband, father, and friend, John had many interests and passions. Some of these included exploring his Catholic faith, reading, science/technology, horseback riding, travelling, backyard mechanical work, scooters and motorcycles, skiing (both water and snow), playing piano and organ, and listening to contemporary and especially classical music. His curiosity in many areas led him to be a lifelong learner.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon, his four sons, David(Liz) of Milwaukee, WI, Alan of Spokane, WA, Tim of Hauser/Rathdrum, ID, and Stephen(Alex) of Beaverton, OR, and his four grandchildren, Theodore, Adelynn, and Deakin of Tim, and Dean of Steve.
Donations in his honor can be made to the Washington State University Veterinary Heritage Scholarship Fund or the Friends of the College of Veterinary Medicine Scholarship Fund and to the Vitalant Blood Center, for which John was a longtime blood/platelet donor.
There will be viewing Monday August 29th from 4-7 PM at Hazen & Jaeger Valley Funeral Home, 1306 N Pines Rd, Spokane Valley. Memorial service to be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 4521 N. Arden Rd, Otis Orchards on August 30th at 11 AM.
