John W. Campbell Jr. of Sparta died suddenly at home Saturday evening. Mr. Campbell grew up in Newark and graduated from Barringer H.S. in 1966. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps and fought in Vietnam from 1966-1968. When honorably discharged, Mr. Campbell enrolled in Jersey City State College graduating with a BA in history. He taught high school history for the Wayne School system for 32 years retiring in 2004.
Mr. Campbell believed wholeheartedly in serving his community. John’s concern for his fellow veterans and the many issues facing combat veterans motivated much of his volunteer efforts. He is a past Commander of Branchville American Legion Post 157, a lifetime member of Pfc Jeffrey S. Patterson Marine Corps League Detachment 747, and the Sparta VFW post 7248.
Growing up in Newark’s North Ward, a predominately Italian neighborhood surrounded John with family and friends. Festive gatherings with food laden tables, flowing red wine, and music and song were the Sunday norm. These gatherings still occur as the Friends of First Avenue (FOFA) meet often to feast and reminisce. John chose to honor his heritage by joining and serving with Sparta Unico.
An organization close to his heart is the Bodhi Food Pantry in Andover. John volunteered to distribute food every Friday and could also be counted on to unload food deliveries, to clean and mop the room, and to drive people or to deliver food. He was fond of the many friends who shared his commitment to Bodhi.
John is survived by sons Ian and Connor Campbell and their mother Jill Cadorin, brother Robert Campbell, sister-in-law Cathy Campbell, and his much loved nieces, nephews, and cousins. Friends and family will gather at Goble Funeral Home in Sparta on Friday April 24 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. On Saturday at 2pm all are invited to attend mass at Our Lady of the Lake Church in Sparta.
In lieu of flowers please consider donating to Bodhi Food Pantry or Sparta Unico.
